To explore new biocompatible antioxidants with the least associated side-effects, the present study was carried out to evaluate the antioxidant activity of leaf extracts of Abutilon indicum L. (Malvaceae). The methanol extract was prepared and screened for in vitro antioxidant activities using Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP) assay. The reducing power of a methanolic leaf extract of Abutilon indicum was markedly enhanced with the increasing concentrations. In addition, the potential antioxidant(s) from the plant extract of Abutilon indicum were partially purified by thin layer chromatography. The results indicate a strong antioxidant activity of the extract.

Tamoxifen therapy for the treatment of hormone responsive breast cancer has limitations due to acquired resistance in the case of recurrences. Embelin, a known inhibitor of X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis protein (XIAP) was also reported to exhibit strong antiestrogenic effects in animal models. Dual role of embelin as a proapoptotic and antiestrogenic agent may have potential benefits in the therapy of breast cancer. In this study, the effects of embelin treatment on estrogen receptor positive Human breast adenocarcinoma (MCF-7) cells was investigated to primarily understand if embelin being an antiestrogen and XIAP inhibitor could be a potential alternative to tamoxifen therapy. Results revealed that, embelin at a concentration of 65 lg/ml attenuated proliferation, inhibited metastatic migration, modulated the expression of Bcl2, Caspases and induced apoptosis in MCF-7 cells which was found to be p53 mediated. Hence, chemotherapy with embelin could be a promising strategy to be experimented in hormone responsive breast cancers.

This paper describes the extraction of embeline from its plant source. The embelin is highly handy in the medical management viz., cytotoxic, antibacterial, wound healing, chemo preventive, lipid lowering agent and many other medical usages. The substituted benzoyl ester derivative of the embelin molecule will also have the medical properties more or less then the parent embelin molecule. They substituted derivatives were synthesized by reacting embelin with different substituted benzoyl halides in the presence of pyridine as base and dichloromethane as solvent. Amongst them, Fluoro, bromo and Iodo (halides) substituted benzoate esters exhibited different thermal activities then its parent embeline molecule. These substituted benzoyl halides showed different thermal activities. These properties are varying with respect to the position of halide in the phenyl substituted ring. The thermal prosperities played vital role in altering lipid lowering activity of the molecule.
