“…The data suggest the presence of good sources of parasitoids close to the crop complemented tolerance of the varieties to the AfRGM. Similar trends have been observed by other workers (Seshu Reddy and Sum 1991;Skovgard and Pats 1997), though there exist Table 2. Correlation between Paspalum galls and parasitism by P. diplosisae and A. procerae, Abakaliki, Nigeria.…”

“…Seshu Reddy & Sum (1992) defined economic injury levels for C. partellus in three varieties of maize by infesting plants of four different ages (21,28,35, and 42 days after plant emergence) with newly hatched larvae. Using the cost of Dipterex as a basis for calculations, they found that the economic injury level varied from 0.66 to 1.41 larvae per plant depending on variety and plant age.…”

“…Reliable sampling methods for stem borers are needed not only for the current studies, but also for decision making in an integrated pest management (IPM) context. Current control recommendations include the use of pesticides (Warui & Kuria, 1983), and an economic injury level has been defined for maize (Seshu Reddy & Sum, 1992). For research purposes, enumerative counts of insects based on destructive plant sampling are usually necessary, particularly for ecological studies where accurate identification of the pest species and estimation of levels of parasitism and predation are paramount.…”

“…Alghali (1992) showed that yield loss due to stem borers damage is influenced by the cultivar, and by the time and number of larvae involved in infestation. Seshu Reddy and Sum (1991), found a linear relationship between infestation and yield loss, and that the extent of loss increased with earlier infestations.…”
