Determination of distribution coefficients (Kd) of various radionuclides on UTEVA resin

Abstract: Using radioisotope markers the distribution coefficients (K d ) of the following elements In, Sn, Sb, Te, Bi, Co, Fe, Nb, Sr, Ba, Ag, Cd, Zr, Hf and Ti were determined with different concentrations of HCl, H 2 SO 4 and HNO 3 for the extraction chromatographic resin Uranium and TEtraValent Actinides (UTEVA). This data can be used for separation of elements in complex mixtures, as well as for correct assessment of the elements chemistry with higher valences such as 3, 4, 5 or 6.

“…Sc differs from the other REE in all acids this could be due to its smaller ionic radii, which allows it to have pronounced differences in its properties towards the sorbent. The sorption of Sc is similar to that of Hf and Zr which have very close ionic radii to that of Sc [15] .…”

“…[14] Recently, distribution coefficients (K d ) for a number of elements were determined for UTEVA resin, but so far no data is available for REE on this resin. [15] The main purpose of UTEVA is the separation of tetravalent actinides also there is information about one trivalent An (Am (III)) in HNO 3 . Am (III) has chemical properties similar to those of the lanthanides, and mostly to these of Eu, so by its properties it is in the middle of Ln row.…”

“…15d. 150 It can be seen that the Bi 3+ in HCl media has a stronger adsorption affinity onto UTEVA resin than in HNO 3 and H 2 SO 4 media. This increased adsorption is due to the formation of Bi-chloride complexes.…”

“…High concentrations of chloride, and low pH, favor the formation of negatively charged complexes, such as [FeCl 4 ] − and [GaCl 4 ] − . The negatively charged complexes follow the HCl concentration and the distribution coefficients of the metal ions for the UTEVA resin [17][18][19]. The active part of the UTEVA resin consists of a neutral dipentyl pentylphosphonate complexing ligand for the metal ion [17].…”

The active part of the UTEVA resin consists of a neutral dipentyl pentylphosphonate complexing ligand for the metal ion [17]. The reduction potential of Fe 3+ to Fe 2+ at a low pH is around +0.8 V and of Ga 3+ to Ga 2+ at around −0.6 V [20,21].…”
