Determination of Detonation Front Curvature Radius of Anfo Explosives and Its Importance in Numerical Modelling of Detonation With the Wood-Kirkwood Model

Abstract: Unlike most military high explosives, which are characterized by an almost plane detonation front, ammonium nitratebased commercial explosives, such as ANFO (ammonium nitrate/fuel oil mixture) and emulsion explosives, are characterized by a curved detonation front. The curvature is directly related to the rate of radial expansion of detonation products in the detonation driving zone and the rate of chemical reactions, and it is one of the characteristics of nonideal explosives. The detonation theories used to … Show more

“…The consequences of the non-ideal behaviour of ANFO are manifested in the strong dependence of the detonation parameters on the charge diameter [3,6,7], existence and characteristics of the confinement [8][9][10][11][12][13], in a curved shock front [2,7,[14][15][16], the existence of a fraction of unreacted ANFO at the sonic point [2,3,14], and a large failure diameter [6,16]. The effects of the confinement characteristic on the detonation properties of ANFO are studied by several researchers [8-11, 17, 18].…”

“…The reason for the wide use of ANFO is its good blasting performance, handling safety, and low price. From a scientific point of view, ANFO explosives are interesting as a typical representative of non-ideal explosives (Bohanek et al, 2023;Short & Jackson, 2015, Tumara et al, 2022. Numerous research studies are devoted to determining the factors that impact the detonation properties of ANFO.…”

“…Determining the detonation front curvature radius involves analysing the characteristics of the explosive material and the conditions under which it is detonated. The curvature radius of the detonation front refers to the radius of the curved shock wave produced by the detonation and is a very important parameter for providing successful DBO (Štimac Tumara et al, 2022). A performance index of the selected explosive influences the determination of specific explosive consumption while DBO designing.…”
