“…The first study on molecular subtyping of C. parvum in Turkey, the main country importing cattle from Uruguay, was published in 2012, and analyzed 13 bovine strains. Subtype IIaA15G2R1, the most frequent subtype found in our study, was identified in 10 animals, while subtype IIaA16G3R1 was identified in 2 animals and subtype IIdA15G1 was found in the remainder ( 69 ); these two subtypes were not identified in our study. Background: Cryptosporidium spp. are enteric protozoan parasites that infect a wide range of animals as well as humans. The studies on Cryptosporidium infections of animals in Turkey are mostly rely on microscopic observation. Few data are available regarding the distribution of Cryptosporidium genotypes and subtypes infection. The aim of this study is to analyse the zoonotic potential of Cryptosporidium oocysts shed from young ruminant livestock. Methods: A total of 415 diarrheic fecal specimens from 333 calves, 67 lambs, and 15 goat kids were examined for the presence of Cryptosporidium oocysts by microscopy. Microscopic positive specimens were then analyzed for Cryptosporidium genotypes and subtypes detection by use of nested PCR of the small subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU rRNA) gene and the highly polymorphic 60 kDa glycoprotein (gp60) gene followed by sequence analyses. Results: The results of this study revealed that 25.6% (106 of 415) of the specimens were positive for Cryptosporidium spp. infection by microscopic examination and molecular analysis. We identified 27.4% (91/333), 19.4% (13/67), and 13.4% (2/15) of positivity in calves, lambs and goat kids, respectively. Genotyping of the SSU rRNA indicated that almost all positive specimens were of C. parvum , except for one calf which was of C. bovis. Sequence analysis of the gp60 gene revealed the most common zoonotic subtypes (IIa and IId) of C. parvum. We detected 11 subtypes (IIaA11G2R1,

Background: Cryptosporidiosis is a zoonotic disease caused by the important parasitic diarrheal agent Cryptosporidium spp. Cryptosporidiosis occurs in all classes of animals and man with a rapidly expanding host range and increased importance since the occurrence of human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome in man. Objectives: To review the global picture of cryptosporidiosis in man and animals with emphasis on prevalence and risk factors. Methods: Current relevant literature on cryptosporidiosis was reviewed. Results: Cryptosporidiosis is widely distributed and the risk factors vary from one region to another with hygiene and immune status as important risk factors. Conclusions: Cryptosporidium spp. associated mortality has not only been reported in immune-compromised patients, but also in immune-competent patients. Yet in many countries not much attention is paid to the control and prevention of this infection in animals and man. The neglect of this disease despite the serious threat it poses to animals, their husbandry, and humans, has led the World Health Organization to list it among globally neglected diseases. To control and prevent this infection more effort needs to be directed at controlling the risk factors of the infection in man and animals.
