Determination of cardiorespiratory function and the optimum anesthetic regimen during laparoscopic surgery in the rat model

Abstract: Low-pressure CO2 pneumoperitoneum up to 30 min in the spontaneously breathing rat does not significantly affect HR, MAP, CI, pH, or PCO2. Inhalational isoflurance/N2O anesthesia produces less hypertension and respiratory acidosis than intraperitoneal pentobarbital during pneumoperitoneum in the rat.

“…There have been reports regarding improvement of the 60 ml syringe (Wilson and Hatchell, 1991) and 50 ml centrifuge tube (Li et al, 2001) in respiration masks for rats, but they have been restricted to short-term experimental studies on the administration of anesthesia or inhalational gas (McBean et al, 1995;Dalton et al, 1996;Ayoub et al, 2001;Braun et al, 2001;Wood et al, 2001;Belayev et al, 2003). There have been no reports on the subject of an artificial respiration mask for the establishment of myocardial ischemia model in rats.…”

“…On the one hand, research has focused on the pathophysiological effects of laparoscopy and pneumoperitoneum on cardiovascular function [6], stress hormone and cytokine reaction [5] and adhesion formation [4]. While on the other hand, new laparoscopic surgical procedures have been investigated such as laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication [2], laparoscopic colon surgery [13], laparoscopic splenectomy and nephrectomy [14].…”

“…In 1931 the first resectional techniques for liver surgery in the rat were reported by Higgins and Anderson [3] who resected up to 70% of the liver parenchyma. Investigations in laparoscopic research have mainly focused on adhesion formation [4], stress hormones and cytokine reactions [5], cardiorespiratory effects of the CO 2 pneumoperitoneum [6], and the severity of peritonitis in perforated gastric ulcer [7] as well as on tumor growth and tumor cell spread [8, 9, 10, 11, 12]. Such studies have been conducted using laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication [2], laparoscopic colon surgery [13], laparoscopic nephrectomy and splenectomy [14].…”

“…Pneumoperitoneum was achieved by subxiphoid puncture using a Veress needle (Ethicon model UV120 (Somerville, New Jersey)) with the animals under general anesthesia. Intraabdominal pressure was maintained between 2 and 4 mmHg with CO 2 for 30 min [5].…”
