Determination of Bilirubin in Serum by Fast Scan Square Wave Voltammetry

Abstract. The use of fast scan square wave voltammetry for the determination of bilirubin in serum is described. The reduction of bilirubin in alkaline solutions with or without serum albumin results in three current peaks. The peak potential and current are related to bilirubin and albumin concentrations and allow the determination of the bilirubin concentrations after the addition of KOH to the sample. The effect of light and time on peak current was also checked. Comparison of results achieved by electroanalytical and spectrophotometric methods prove the feasibility of measuring total bilirubin in serum by electrochemical methods.
