Determinants of the spatial distribution of exporters in regions: the role of ownership

Abstract: Spatial distribution of exporters only recently has attracted the attention of researchers, while the location of economic activity as such has been subject of profound analysis for a long time. Regions have become more open and thus vulnerable to external shocks. Nevertheless, the increase in the number of exporters in the population of firms is one of the top priorities of regions' economic policy agenda, as it improves competitiveness and overall productivity. Literature overview shows an important gap, whi… Show more

“…Most of the third and fourth level nodes are highly concentrated in the east, but there are also exceptions. For instance, Lhasa (33) and Changchun (38), the capital cities in the southwest and northeast, are located in the third level ( Figure 2). In general, the node level of cities in the all-industry investment network is basically consistent with their administrative status.…”

“…Among the four cities selected as TOP 1, Shanghai was selected up to nine times, showing strong radiation capability to cities in Jiangsu Province. In addition to the geographical proximity, the impact of historical legacy [38] and cultural ties on investment flows cannot be neglected. In fact, not only most of Shanghai once belonged to Jiangsu (for instance, Jiading and Songjiang were once under the jurisdiction of Suzhou, the former has a solid foundation of automobile industry, while the latter is the location of the Songjiang University Town), Shanghai is also within the Wu culture radiation area (Suzhou and Wuxi are the centers of Wu culture).…”

“…Our contribution in this regard is the attempt to show the role of often neglected albeit important factors contributing to the resulting image of trade openness in Poland. The sole determinants of exporters' location are the subject of the analysis conducted by Nazarczuk et al (2017).…”

“…We fi ll the gap in the Brexit-related literature by applying the perspective of the regions of other EU countries, engaged in trading relations with the UK. Our approach subscribes into the point of view of those economists, that are of the opinion that 'geography still matters' (Capello, Caragliu, & Fratesi, 2018;McCann, 2018;Nazarczuk, Umiński, & Brodzicki, 2019) and due to many factors (incl. gravity, path dependency, foreign direct investments -FDI) some regions have developed relatively stronger commercial links with the British market than others.…”

“…Export performance can also be positively affected by promotional activity, carried on towards region's fi rms (Gil, Llorca, & Serrano, 2008;Teixeira & Barros, 2014). Another aspect is the attraction of foreign owned entities (FOEs) to the region, which reveal a superior export performance, compared to indigenous fi rms (Mayer & Ottaviano, 2008;Nazarczuk & Umiński, 2019;Zhang & Song, 2001). FOEs, according to Forsgren (2008), perform a networking function.…”
