Many households living in developing countries still collect water from unimproved sources. The situation is particularly worse in rural areas. This study analyses the differences in improved water source adoption between urban and rural households in Cameroon. Our analysis uses data from the fifth Cameroon Demographic and Health survey conducted in 2018-2019. Results from logit regressions suggest that the use of improved water source increases when the head of household is a woman. It also increases with education, access to information and wealth. Conversely, it decreases with household size. The approach of Fairlie ( 2006) is further used to evaluate the contribution of the above factors to urban-rural differences in the adoption of improved water sources. Our analysis shows that the above factors explain 41% of the differences in water source choices observed between urban and rural households. The policy recommendations of the research are described in the paper.

Benin is located in West Africa in the tropical zone between the equator and the Tropic of Cancer. The Plateau borough (city of Savè) in Benin faces problems of discontinuous access to drinking water due to its geographical location. This study focuses on the quality of drinking water available from source to final storage for domestic use. The Plateau borough has 23 hydraulic structures, 13 of which are non‐functional and 10 functional (in good condition), and seven of these were the subject of our study (water sampling at the source for bacteriological analysis). Quantitative data processing was reinforced by documentary research, socio‐anthropological surveys, qualitative data from field work, field analysis and laboratory bacteriological analysis on specimens collected during the study: water at the source, during transport, and storage. The sampling technique was divided into two parts: (a) choice of water points (type of structure); and (b) categories of actors submitted to the questionnaires. The results reveal that three types of hydraulic works serve as a source of drinking water for the population: Pumps with human propulsion; standpipes; and populations subscribed to the water distribution network of the Société Nationale des Eaux du Béni. Our analysis of 12 samples of water collected from pumps with human propulsion, standpipes and populations subscribed to the water distribution network found that 58.3% are drinkable and 41.6% are infected, and that links exist between water quality and poor human practices. The indices of infection of Escherichia coli and faecal coliform are all higher than the maximum value authorized by the World Health Organization, set at zero colony‐forming units per 100 ml of water (0 CFU/100 ml). Many problems which are confronted in Africa, including Benin, are a consequence of water supply problems, and the results of this study may be useful in the development of policies that could help improve the well‐being of communities. Recommendations are made on improving water quality management in Benin, including proposed actions for Municipal and Health Authorities.

L’eau de boisson doit répondre aux exigences de qualité microbiologiques, chimiques, radiologiques et esthétiques. L’objectif de cette étude était donc d’évaluer la perception de la qualité des eaux du robinet et le recours aux eaux alternatives par les ménages de la commune de Port-Bouët dans la ville d’Abidjan. Une enquête transversale à visée descriptive a été réalisée auprès de 961 chefs de ménages de la commune de Port-Bouët de janvier à octobre 2022. Les résultats des enquêtes ont montré que l’eau de robinet consommée est de qualité satisfaisante. Les coupures d’eau s’effectuaient toujours dans plus de 50% des ménages ce qui les emmène à stocker régulièrement dans une proportion de 80%. Seulement 24,5% des ménages ont déclaré acceptable la quantité d’eau distribuée par le réseau d’adduction publique. Pratiquement 2% et 4% des enquêtés affirmaient qu’il était très fréquent d’observer les diarrhées respectivement chez les enfants de -5 ans et chez les adultes. Pour le recours aux eaux alternatives, 42% des ménages enquêtés ont déclaré avoir recours aux eaux en sachets et 41% aux eaux en bouteille. Malgré la qualité satisfaisante de l’eau de robinet, les populations ont recours aux eaux alternatives qui pourraient occasionner d’énormes problèmes de santé publique. English title: Household perception of tap water quality in the Adjouffou, Gonzagueville and Anani neighbourhoods of Port-Bouët in Côte d'Ivoire Drinking water must meet microbiological, chemical, radiological and aesthetic quality requirements. The aim of this study was therefore to assess the perception of tap water quality and the use of alternative water by households in the Port-Bouët commune in the city of Abidjan. A descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted among 961 heads of households in the commune of Port-Bouët from January to October 2022. The survey results showed that the tap water consumed was of satisfactory quality. More than 50% of households still had their water cut, which means that 80% of them regularly stock up. Only 24.5% of households said that the quantity of water supplied by the public supply network was acceptable. Almost 2% and 4% of respondents said that diarrhoea was very common among children under 5 and adults respectively. As regards the use of alternative water sources, 42% of households surveyed said they used sachets and 41% bottled water. Despite the satisfactory quality of tap water, people were turning to alternative waters, which could cause huge public health problems.
