Determinants and Mechanisms of Tourists’ Environmentally Responsible Behavior: Applying and Extending the Value-Identity-Personal Norm Model in China

Abstract: It is well recognized that tourists’ environmentally responsible behavior is a prominent contributor to the sustainable development of tourist destinations. Based on the original Value-Identity-Personal norm (VIP) model and self-efficacy theory, this study proposes an extended VIP model for exploring the generalized determinants of tourists’ environmentally responsible behavior and investigating the impact mechanism of this behavior in China. A total number of 435 self-reported questionnaires were collected on… Show more

“…So far, research on the environmental impact of human behavior has mainly focused on studying the importance of pro-environmental behaviors as a way of mitigating this impact, on reducing environmentally harmful actions, and on how these pro-environmental behaviors are related to attitudes, beliefs, value orientations, or identity profiles. A possible future line of research based on our results could be linked to recent evidence on the Values-Identity-Personal Norm model -VIP- [59,60], as well as the integration of the VIP model and the Theory of Planned Behavior [61]. Along these lines, and based on our results, it would be feasible to further investigate the link between environmental self-identity and consumer identities, and how these variables could contribute explanatory power in the VIP model when trying to predict frugal consumption behavior.…”

“…These moral obligations in turn guide people's pro-environmental behavior (Ruepert et al, 2016;van der Werff and Steg, 2016; Figure 1). The full chain of relationships between biospheric values, environmental self-identity and personal norms has been demonstrated for pro-environmental behavior at work (Ruepert et al, 2016), participation in renewable energy projects (van der Werff and Steg, 2016) and tourists' pro-environmental behavior (Xu et al, 2019).…”
