Background. The global burden of stroke is still high, particularly in developing countries, with hypertension serving as the main risk factor. The awareness of stroke among hypertensive patients is crucial for stroke prevention. This study was aimed at identifying the awareness of being at risk of stroke and its determinant factors among hypertensive patients in Banyumas, Indonesia. Methods. This was a cross-sectional study conducted in Primary Health Centers (PHCs) in Banyumas Regency, Indonesia, from April to August 2019. A simple random sampling technique was used to select the representatives’ PHCs. Hypertensive patients who came regularly to the PHCs were consecutively recruited. Data were collected through a self-reported questionnaire and medical records. The main outcome was the level of participants’ awareness of being at risk of stroke. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to measure determinant factors associated with the level of awareness. Results. Out of 457 patients investigated, 77.46% had a low level of awareness. Low knowledge of hypertension, low income, and no history of previous stroke were associated with a low-level of awareness (odds ratio (OR) 1.942, 95% CI 1.195-3.158, p 0.007; OR 2.321, 95% CI 1.326-4.064, p 0.003; and OR 6.033, 95% CI 2.450-14.858, p < 0.001 , respectively). Conclusion. Majority of hypertensive patients were unaware of being at risk of stroke. Knowledge of hypertension, income, and history of previous stroke are factors that may influence the awareness of being at risk of stroke among them. This emphasizes the need to provide better campaigns and education programs to raise the awareness of stroke in a community setting, particularly for the population at risk.

Stroke is a neurovascular disease that is the second cause of death and the third cause of disease in the world. The prevalence of stroke in Indonesia has increased. The increasing prevalence of stroke can be caused by low stroke prevention. Factors that influence stroke prevention behavior are knowledge and awareness. Efforts to reduce the incidence of stroke are primary preventions. The first activity was detection of stroke risk using the Stroke Risk Scorecard, examination of blood pressure, body weight, measurement of blood glucose and cholesterol levels. The second was providing education. This activity was carried out at Kendangan, Caturharjo, Sleman, Yogyakarta. The stroke risk detection was attended by 67 people. The results of risk factor detection found that people at high risk of stroke were 4 people (6%), and 63 people at low risk of stroke (94%). People with hypertension 31 (46%), hypercholesterolemia 26 (38%), smoking 7 (10%), never exercising 50 (74%), and overweight 7 (10%). Education of stroke was attended by 36 people. The knowledge has increased after being given education (score 15) with an average pre-test score of 59,41 (min-max 20-100) and a post-test of 74.41 (min-max 30-100). Stroke risk detection and primary prevention education is an effort to prevent stroke in an early and continuous manner

BACKGROUND: High blood pressure self-care profile (HBP-SCP) is one of the instruments that needed to evaluate education program among hypertension patients. AIM: The purpose of the study was to translate and validate HBP-SCP into Indonesian version. METHODS: This study involved translation, content validation, and psychometric testing. The first instrument was conducted forward and backward translation by experts. Seven expert reviewed the contents for consistency, clarity, difficulty, representativeness, and suitability for inclusion. Finally, instrument was tested for reliability and validity on 40 hypertensive patients using Cronbach’s alpha and Pearson’s moment product. RESULTS: The final Indonesian version of HBP-SCP included behavior, motivation, and self-efficacy that each consists of 20 items questions were valid and reliable with positive expert review ratings (content validity index 0.964), internal consistency reliability coefficient ranged from 0.911 to 0.955. Items questionnaire of Indonesian version of HBP-SCP had strong correlation and significant validity (p ≤ 0.05). CONCLUSION: Indonesian version of HBP-SCP is a valid and reliable instrument to assess behavior, motivation, and self-efficacy among hypertension patients and evaluate group based hypertension education programs in Indonesia.
