Twenty-two raptors from a rehabilitation centre were evaluated for the presence of yeasts prior to returning them to the wild, and the recovered Candida isolates were tested for in vitro antifungal susceptibility and phospholipase production. Samples were collected from the crop/lower esophagus and cloaca. In vitro antifungal susceptibility and phospholipase production of 21 Candida strains were assessed through broth microdilution and growth on egg yolk agar respectively. Twenty-seven isolates, belonging to seven species, were recovered from 16 tested birds, with C. albicans and C. famata as the most prevalent species. Three out of 21 isolates (2 C. albicans and 1 C. tropicalis) were simultaneously resistant to fluconazole and itraconazole. As for phospholipase production, 8 (8/21) isolates (6 C. albicans, 1 C. famata and 1 C. parapsilosis) showed enzymatic activity. The most relevant finding in this study was the isolation of resistant Candida spp. from wild raptors that had never been submitted to antifungal therapy, which suggests exposure to environmental contaminants. Based on this, we propose the assessment of Candida spp. from the gastrointestinal tract of raptors as a tool for environmental monitoring.

Ostrich raising around the world have some key factors and farming profit depend largely on information and ability of farmers to rear these animals. Non fertilized eggs from ostriches are discharged in the reproduction season. Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli are microorganisms involved in animal and human diseases. In order to optimize the use of sub products of ostrich raising, non fertilized eggs of four selected birds were utilized for development of polyclonal IgY antibodies. The birds were immunized (200ug/animal) with purified recombinant staphylococcal enterotoxin C (recSEC) and synthetic recRAP, both derived from S. aureus, and recBFPA and recEspB involved in E. coli pathogenicity, diluted in FCA injected in the braquial muscle. Two subsequent immunization steps with 21 days intervals were repeated in 0,85% saline in FIA. Blood and eggs samples were collected before and after immunization steps. Egg yolk immunoglobulins were purified by precipitation with 19% sodium sulfate and 20% ammonium sulphate methodologies. Purified IgY 50μL aliquots were incubated in 850μL BHI broth containing 50μL inoculums of five strains of S. aureus and five strains of E.coli during four hours at 37°C. Growth inhibition was evaluated followed by photometry reading (DO550nm). Egg yolk IgY preparation from hiperimmunized birds contained antibodies that inhibited significantly (p<0,05) growth of strains tested. Potential use of ostrich IgY polyclonal antibodies as a diagnostic and therapeutic tool is proposed for diseased animals.

Bras. 32(9):927-930, setembro 2012 927 RESUMO.-O presente trabalho teve por objetivo identiϐi-car as principais bactérias aeróbias que compõem a microbiota natural do pavilhão auricular de cutias hígidas. Para tanto, foram utilizadas 48 cutias, criadas em cativeiro sob as condições Semiáridas do Nordeste Brasileiro. Esses animais foram distribuídos nas categorias de adultos (N=32) e ϐilhotes (N=16), e, em ambas, distribuídos igualmente entre machos e fêmeas. Através de um swab, em cada animal coletou-se de cada orelha a secreção presente na superϐície do pavilhão auricular dos animais, totalizando 96 amostras. Este material foi refrigerado, e encaminhado ao laboratório para a realização das análises microbiológicas The aim of this study was to identify the aerobic bacteria of the auricular natural microbiota from healthy agoutis (Dasyprocta aguti Linnaeus, 1758). In the total, 48 agoutis were used in this experiment, being 32 adults and 16 puppies (both groups divided into equal parts between males and females). The animals were raised under captive conditions, in the Brazilian Semiarid. Adicionalmente, a criação de animais silvestres em cativeiro desponta como forma indireta e importante para se conservar espécies ameaçadas de extinção. Diante destes fatos, cresce o interesse da sociedade em estudar tais espécies, pela possibilidade de aproveitá-las quer seja no aproveitamento direto desta fonte de alimento ou mesmo na geração de renda, através da comercialização de produtos que apresentam grande potencial de mercado (Mendonça et al. 2006).
