“…By means of in vivo and in vitro experi ments, the toxicity of monomeric methyl methacrylate has been confirmed numerous times to date [1,3,4], Due to the method employed, the tests to set toxicity limits for the human eye have lead to such disparate theshold concentrations, however, that it is not yet unambiguously clarified whether the residual monomer concentration present in IOL suffices to induce the postoperative sterile intraocular inflammation. It also is not certain whether ethylene oxide absorbed by the IOL as a result of ethylene oxide ster ilization [8] is actually capable of causing such inflammatory processes; the previously cited experiences of Boyaner and Solomon [2] and Starck et al [9] point to this possibil ity in any case.…”

Sterile inflammatory reactions of varying degrees are a rare, but not uncommon, complication after intraocular lens implantation. At present we still do not know the cause of these processes, but we consider two chemical substances contained in the lens at least as risk factors for them: monomeric methyl methacrylate, which is present in any lens made from polymethyl methacrylate (Perspex), and ethylene oxide, an extremely toxic agent, which is absorbed by the lens during sterilization with this gas. Gas chromatographic investigations show that under sterilization of intraocular lenses by ⁶⁰Co radiation the amount of monomeric methyl methacrylate in the lens can be reduced drastically. Also, any contamination of the lens by ethylene oxide is avoided. Therefore, at least two important arguments speak in favor of this alternative sterilization technique.

Raman Spectroscopy in Ophthalmology: From Experimental Tool to Applications In Vivo

Raman spectroscopy is a qualitative and quantitative optical technique for determining the molecular composition of matter. Improvements in spectroscopic instruments, especially the modality to detect low light level signals extended the Raman technique to biomedical applications, even in delicate structures like the eye. The purpose of this paper was to make an inventory of performed applications of Raman spectroscopy in biomedical science and especially in ophthalmology. A literature search was done using Medline, Current Contents, a patent server on the Internet, and references found in articles and patents. This search revealed a variety of Raman techniques and applications in biomedical research, and an increasing flow of articles starting in the late 1970s on Raman spectroscopy in ophthalmology. This increase in literature about Raman spectroscopy in ophthalmology feeds the expectation that this valuable technique will be introduced in the future into clinical practice.
