Abstract: ABSTRACT. The objective of this study was to verify whether Toxoplasma gondii is excreted in the milk of naturally infected sheep. In order to accomplish this, 275 lactating ewes were used; these were bred extensively in 17 estates distributed across nine cities. Polymerase chain reaction amplification was used to detect T. gondii DNA in milk samples, and the indirect immunofluorescence test was employed for the detection of anti-T. gondii IgG antibodies in the sera, with a cut-off value of 1:64. It was possib… Show more

“…It is because of the zoonotic aspects of the parasite. In keeping with this, several studies have been conducted on the detection of T. gondii in milk samples of naturally infected ruminants (Bezerra et al, ; Camossi et al, ; de Santana Rocha et al, ) which were supported our findings. Gaps in the concerning risk assessment of T. gondii by milk consumption are renowned.…”

“…Transmission by food may occur with the ingestion of sporulated oocysts present in vegetables or water and/or tissue cysts present in raw or undercooked meat. The transmission of T. gondii with raw milk has been reported and several studies demonstrated the presence of the parasite’s DNA in sheep milk (Bezerra et al , 2015; de Santana Rocha et al , 2015; Luptakova et al , 2015). In Italy, the consumption of sheep milk (397.510 ton in 2015) is second only to the consumption of cow milk (11.161.224 ton in 2015) (www.istat.it).…”
