“…It is used as feed additive for the prevention and treatment of various animal diseases because of its broad-spectrum antibacterial activity. However, the misuse of SDM is associated to severe health hazards; for example, acute haemolytic anemia [124]. Consequently, concerns for SDM residue detection in animal-derived food, especially milk, honey, eggs, meat and other foodstuffs, have been raised.…”

“…Subsequently, various detection methods were also investigated. Some studies employed the image processing technique (for example, gray values of POM images) [ 15 ], dielectric properties of LC molecules [ 16 , 17 ] and UV-vis/reflection spectra [ 18 , 19 ] to analyze the variations in LC-based biosensors and to replace the naked eye observation. However, sensitivities of these reported works still need to be significantly improved.…”

“…Owing to orientational behavior and the low anchoring energy of LCs, they have been extensively exploited to amplify and transduce the interaction between aptamer and its target into optical signals through a cross-polarizer, which can be observed under a polarized optical microscope [10][11][12][13][14][15][16]. LC biosensing approaches are label-free and can Molecules 2021, 26, 2893 2 of 12 detect various analytes with a simple readout, thus avoiding the problems related to present diagnostic techniques and offering several advantages over other conventional sensing techniques [17][18][19].…”
