Detection of sequences from a potentially novel strain of cell fusing agent virus in Mexican Stegomyia (Aedes) aegypti mosquitoes

Abstract: Flaviviruses (FVs) are a very heterogeneous group of viruses that includes viruses capable of infecting insects and/or vertebrates. Different human-disease-causing FVs are disseminated by mosquitoes, and therefore, the search for FV in these insects has recently been proposed in order to evaluate their potential transmission in a given community. An entomological survey was carried out in Colima (the hyperendemic dengue fever transmission zone in Mexico) to collect culicidae in urban and wild areas. No human-p… Show more

“…CFAV NS5 and NS3 proteins had the greatest level of amino acid identity with other flaviviruses at 45% and 34%, respectively. Since these initial isolation and characterization studies, the presence of CFAV has been detected in feral mosquito pools in multiple regions in both Asia (Hoshino et al, 2009;Yamanaka et al, 2013) and the Americas (Cook, 2006;Espinoza-Gómez et al, 2011). In addition to field-captured mosquitoes evidence of CFAV infection in colonized laboratory mosquitoes has been demonstrated (Bolling et al, 2015a).…”

“…Since then, it has been detected in wild-caught mosquitoes in Puerto Rico (Cook et al, 2006), Thailand (Kihara et al, 2007 and Mexico (Espinoza-Gó mez et al, 2011). Over the past 40 years, many other ISFs have been isolated and identified from field-collected mosquitoes, belonging to different species, in several locations (Ferreira et al, 2013;Haddow et al, 2013; Papa et al, 2014 Calzolari et al, 2010a Calzolari et al, , b, 2012aCalzolari et al, , 2013aCerutti et al, 2012;Ravanini et al, 2012;Pautasso et al, 2013).…”

“…Subsequently, several strains of the virus have also been detected in field-collected A. aegypti and other mosquito species Espinoza-Gómez et al, 2011;Hoshino et al, 2007;Kihara et al, 2007;Sang et al, 2003;Yamanaka et al, 2013). CFAV has extensive similarities to medically important flaviviruses in terms of genome size, structure and gene order (Cammisa-Parks et al, 1992).…”
