Detection of Periodontal Pathogens in Oral Mucous Membranes of Edentulous Individuals

Abstract: Although we did not detect P. gingivalis and P. intermedia in newborns, periodontal pathogens could be detected from the oral mucous membranes of edentulous individuals. Our results suggest that major attention should be paid to edentulous individuals as an important measure in the prevention of the initial colonization of natural teeth and dental implants by periodontal pathogens.

“…With a prevalence of 48% and 40% of moderate and severe periodontitis in patients aged 65 to 74 years, periodontitis is one of the most important reasons for tooth loss and is widely prevalent in the population 11. Further, periodontal pathogens are detectable in edentulous patients in other oral niches, such as the dorsum of the tongue or the buccal mucosa 12. The bacteria of the plaque deposits of the teeth or the tongue might be shed into the saliva and then be transported to the voice prosthesis.…”
