“…Interspecies transmission of AstV has been documented on more occasions (De Battisti et al., ; De Benedictis, Schultz‐Cherry, Burnham, & Cattoli, ; Mihalov‐Kovacs et al., ; Nagai et al., ). Also, novel human AstVs (MLB1, MLB2, VA1, HMO‐C, HMO‐B, HMO‐A, VA‐2) have been identified that are genetically unrelated to “classical” human AstVs (Banyai, Meleg, Moschidou, & Martella, ; Finkbeiner, Holtz, et al., ; Finkbeiner, Le, Holtz, Storch, & Wang, ; Finkbeiner, Li, et al., ; Kapoor et al., ) and closer to animal AstVs. The origin of animal‐like human AstVs has not been deciphered yet.…”

“…AstV-MLB1 is not yet a well-established AD agent and its role in human health remains unknown. A recent control case study conducted in India could not determine the association between AstV-MLB1 and AD [ 43 ]. Another important point is the fact that a large number of samples remain without an etiologic agent, drawing attention to other pathogens that may be involved.…”

“…These novel human AstVs are distantly related to "classic" human AstV types 1 to 8, and more similar genetically to some animal AstVs. [23][24][25] Antibodies to one such novel AstV, strain MAstV/GII.B/Hu/THA/2001/NE-3010, have been detected in 20% to 36% of the sera of children. 26 These findings suggest recent interspecies transmission events of AstVs from animals to humans and, more importantly, widespread exposure of humans to these viruses.…”
