Detection of Human Papillomavirus 16-Specific IgG and IgM Antibodies in Patient Sera: A Potential Indicator of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma Risk Factor

Abstract: The association between human papillomavirus type 16 (HPV16) and oral cancer has been widely reported. However, detecting anti-HPV antibodies in patient sera to determine risk for oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) has not been well studied. In the present investigation, a total of 206 OSCC serum samples from the Malaysian Oral Cancer Database & Tissue Bank System, with 134 control serum samples, were analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbant assay (ELISA) to detect HPV16-specific IgG and IgM antibodies. In add… Show more

“…In 2012 two similar studies were carried out, one on healthy patient saliva and other on Oral squamous cell carcinomas patients reported 6.1 % and 3.9 % high HPV-6, HPV-18, HPV-66 and HPV-16, HPV-18, HPV-33, HPV-57 respectively (Hafed et al, 2012;Seifi et al, 2013). Another past study carried by Kermani I et (Kerishnan et al, 2016). Baig et al, (2012) reported 47 HPV patients with high risk HPV-16 and HPV-18.…”

“…Oral cavity cancer is an example of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) in the head and neck area and can be defined as a malignant tumour derived from squamous epithelial cells that contributes significant morbidity and mortality each year 1 . Alcohol and tobacco abuse is recognized as an initiating element in HNSCC, and HPV infection is also defined as a preliminary factor 2 - 4 . Molecular alterations and aberrant signalling pathways in carcinogenesis of the head and neck have been identified 5 .…”

“…Several risk factors have been identified as key players in the development and progression of OSCC such as tobacco smoking [7], smokeless tobacco [13] alcohol [14], betel quid [15] and areca nut chewing [16] and HPV infection [17]. Additionally, an equally common use of risk factors has been observed in both genders in Pakistan.…”
