Detection of hepatitis E virus RNA and genotype in Bangladesh

Abstract: HEV RNA was found in sporadic AH and FH and sub-clinical CLD cases, but not in HP. HEV RNA-positivity was significantly related to values of ALT and AST and titers of IgG and IgM specific anti-HEV, with IgM specific anti-HEV showing the most significant relationship. All clones were genotype I, which is prevalent in South Asia.

“…26 These findings confirm recent clinical studies identifying HEV as an etiologic agent contributing to substantial hepatitis morbidity in Bangladesh. 18,27,28 The rural population prevalence is lower than the 60.1% proposed by a recent urban study of 273 apparently healthy adults, 19 but similar to the 27% estimates of anti-HEV IgG prevalence in a study of 105 Bangladeshi peacekeepers participating in the United Nations Mission in Haiti in 1996. 17 A 1992 population serosurvey in southern India found an overall anti-HEV seroprevalence of 26%, 29 whereas other India estimates range from 4% to 64%, with varying sample sizes and age ranges using different assays.…”

“…Researchers found. All the clones of HEV isolated from Bangladesh had high homology with South Asian, Southeast Asian and Chinese clones of genotype 1, which is virulent to cause the maternal mortality 18 . In addition, malnutrition, folate deficiency and unhygienic habits of pregnant women may predispose to have high mortality rate in developing country like Bangladesh (19) .…”

“…water-borne outbreaks (Corwin et al, 1996;Naik et al, 1992). Genotype 1 is mainly found in Asia and Africa (Sugitani et al, 2009;Teshale et al, 2010), while genotype 2 has been isolated from Mexico and Africa, but seems less common (Maila et al, 2004;Velázquez et al, 1990) (see Fig. 4).…”
