Detection of Heavy Metal Ions by Ratiometric Photoelectric Sensor

Abstract: In recent years, heavy metal pollution has become increasingly serious. Heavy metals exist in an environment mainly in the form of ions (heavy metal ions, HMs). They can contaminate food, water, soil, and the atmosphere, leading to serious harm to plants and animals. With high bioavailability and nonbiodegradability, HMs can accumulate through biomagnification. Consequently, heavy metal pollution has become the cause of many fatal diseases threatening human health and ecological environment. Therefore, the acc… Show more

“…It is converted to methylmercury by certain microorganisms in water. Methylmercury is readily absorbed by aquatic organisms, such as fish, and as smaller organisms are eaten by larger ones, the mercury concentration increases, leading to biomagnification . Considering these, herein we have employed compound 1 to detect the presence of residual Hg 2+ in different natural water samples.…”

“…They can enter the body through dermal contact and the respiratory and digestive tracts and accumulate in the body by precipitation, leading to neurological disorders, cancer, genotoxicity, and even death. Therefore, accurate quantification of HMs is essential to protect the ecological environment and maintain human health [ 126 , 127 , 128 ]. A simple, fast, and intuitive distance-based readout on a paper chip for Hg 2+ detection strategy was devised under the formation of Hg 2+ -mediated G-tetramer-hemin DNAzymes [ 129 ].…”

“…However, excess copper can accumulate in the body, which can affect the function of the liver and kidneys, and copper has also been linked to brain diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. 1,2 Human activities cause atmospheric and water pollution from copper ions, which eventually return to the soil causing soil contamination. 3 This in turn affects the yield and quality of crops.…”
