Detection of ground subsidence in the city of Lisbon: Comparison of InSAR and topographic measurements

Abstract: In this work we present the results of an experiment aiming to measure a ground subsidence in the city of Lisbon, Portugal, possibly related to works for the building of the city's subway infrastructure. A time series of 46 ERS SAR images, acquired between May 1995 and January 2001, is interferometrically processed using the Persistent Scatterers (PS) technique and terrain deformation velocities estimated at the location of PS. The interferometric SAR (InSAR) estimates are compared to topographic measurements … Show more

“…A negative velocity denotes a movement away from the satellite, i.e., a subsidence displacement. This subsidence was already detected within the TERRAFIRMA project [17] and afterward analyzed and validated by [12] and [41]. Although these studies coincide as regards the subsidence location and spatial extension of the subsiding area, the displacement value and the corresponding mean velocity are quite different in the analyzed periods.…”

“…As is well known, drilling tunnels may induce surface settlements of a few centimeters because of groundwater drainage and associated pore reduction. They may seem of little importance if compared to those associated with oil, gas or groundwater extraction but they are large enough to represent a potential treat, especially below densely built-up urban areas [9][10][11][12][13]. Examples are reported in the literature in the cases of the construction of an investigation audit 1.5 km away from the Zeuzier arch dam [14] and the Gotthard highway tunnel [15,16].…”
