“…Several groups have investigated the potential association of OLP with Epstein–Barr virus but have found no association . Recently, distinct expression profiles of human cytomegalovirus‐encoded microRNAs in the plasma of patients with OLP have been reported without known roles of these microRNAs in the etiology of OLP …”

“…In line with that, Sand et al 16 and Shariati et al 20 found significantly higher prevalence of EBV in OLP patients compared to healthy controls 16,20 . Contrarily, studies by Veira et al 21 and Sahebjamee et al 22 did not find a significant association between EBV and OLP 21,22 . Furthermore, a more recent study investigating the presence of EBV in OLP patients using the in situ hybridization technique (ISH) did not detect EBV neither in OLP cases nor in controls 23 .…”

“…The general characteristics of the included studies are summarized in Table 1. Ten case‐control studies 13‐16,20‐23,28,29 comprising 690 subjects (386 OLP cases and 304 healthy controls) were included in the present review; of these, 8 studies were eligible for the meta‐analysis 13‐16,20,21,28,29 . The studies were published between 1996 and 2018.…”

“…By using PCR or ELISA some investigators detect antibodies against EBV in approximately 25% of LP patients ( 21 - 23 ) while others have found as high as 62% EBV positive tissue, 18% in saliva, 17% in exfoliated cells and 8% of plasma , using nested PCR ( 24 ). Still, no correlation between OLP and EBV was seen.…”
