Detection of antibodies to Leishmania donovani in animals in a kala-azar endemic region in eastern Sudan: a preliminary report

Abstract: The prevalence of antibodies against Leishmania donovani in selected domestic and wild animal species in 2 villages in Sudan with active L. donovani transmission in humans was investigated. Screening of domestic animals (donkeys, cows, sheep, goats, camels and dogs) with the direct agglutination test (DAT) detected reaction rates above the cut-off titres in donkeys (68.7%), cows (21.4%) and goats (8.5%), and which were also found in wild rats (5.5%). Sera of sheep, camels and dogs had a weak agglutination reac… Show more

“…The literature is scarce regarding serological diagnosis of leishmaniosis in rats; we could only find two studies using an immunochromatographic method (LIMA et al, 2013;SINGH et al, 2013), two using ELISA (MUKHTAR et al, 2000;BARBOSA, 2005) in Sudan and Brazil, and two using IFAT (BEN-ISMAIL et al, 1989;CÁSSIA-PIRES et al, 2014) in Tunisia and Brazil. Our prevalence based on ELISA was higher (23.3%) than previously reported (0% in Brazil and 4.1% in Sudan) and based on IFAT was lower (3.3%) than that of previous reports (27.2% in Tunisia and 51.3% in Brazil).…”

“…Serological evidences of anti- L . donovani antibodies in different domestic animals including cattle were reported in Sudan [14]. In a recent study in Nepal, Leishmania DNA was detected in several domestic animals including cattle from an endemic area [15].…”

“…Studies in Sudan and Kenya have detected L. donovani in domestic animals ( 2 , 3 ), but whether these play a role in Uganda is unknown. In Uganda, the disease appears to be restricted to Pokot County, a semiarid lowland area in Nakapiripirit District (Appendix Figure).…”
