Detecting livestock production zones

Abstract: Communities are sets of nodes that are related in an important way, most likely sharing common properties and/or playing similar roles within a network. Unraveling a network structure, and hence the trade preferences and pathways, could be useful to a researcher or a decision maker. We implemented a community detection algorithm to find livestock communities, which is consistent with the definition of a livestock production zone, assuming that a community is a group of farm premises in which an animal is more … Show more

“…Although at the present AMPs are one of the main tools adopted for traceability, it does not allow individual traceability, since the information they contain concerns animal lots and their movement (Grisi-Filho et al, 2013). This system interferes with the identification of animals or beef products, where individual information is needed (Rocha & Lopes 2002), thus hampering the control of diseases such as bovine cysticercosis.…”

“…The AMP is an official and compulsory document for any animal movement and retains information on the origin, destination, purpose, species and number of animals being transported (Brasil 2006b). However, AMPs do not allow individual traceability, since the information concerns animal lots and their movement (Grisi-Filho et al 2013).…”

“…(). This algorithm is based on the calculation of LinkRank, a concept derived from Google's PageRank (Brin & Page, ) that takes into account the incoming links of a given municipality and the incoming links of its neighbours (Grisi‐Filho et al., ). We also calculated the modularity of this network, based on the results of the trade groups (communities) as a measure of how good the communities were aggregated or how separated the different municipalities are from each other.…”

“…The state of Mato Grosso (MT) had the largest cattle herd (25.7 million cattle) in Brazil in 2007(IBGE, 2015. Since the herd size of a given premises could vary during the year, we calculated the mean between the herd size on December 31, on December 31, 2007, to The aims of the present study were twofold: first, to compare positive and negative herds identified in the brucellosis survey conducted in 2003, regarding the centrality measures in the network of bovine movements in the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil, in 2007; and second, to examine the association between herd size (particularly females older than 24 months, denoted FEM24+) and animal trade.…”
