a b s t r a c tTephrochronology is an exceptionally important tool in the precise regional correlation of Early and Middle Pleistocene sedimentary strata in Japan. The present study reveals that the Yukawa tephra 5 (YUT5) derived from the Older Ontake volcano, the Nezumigawa (Nzg) and Mitamitajima (Mtj) tephras of the Ina Bazin, and the Byakubi-E tephra (Byk-E) of the Boso Peninsula are the same tephra on the basis of their lithofacies, bulk grain composition, mafic mineral composition, major element composition of hornblende, and stratigraphic relationships with the dated tephras. We propose to call the series of tephras correlated with Byk-E the Ontake-Byakubi Tephra Bed (On-Byk Tephra) following the naming convention in which the tephra name consists of the names of the source volcano and the type location. The Matuyama-Brunhes Chronozone boundary occurs just above Byk-E in the type section of the Kokumoto Formation in the Kazusa Group, which is a candidate Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) for the lower boundary of the Middle Pleistocene Subseries. Therefore, On-Byk Tephra becomes a critically important marker tephra bed for the Early-Middle Pleistocene boundary in central Japan. The present study indicates that the major element composition of hornblende can be a useful tool for identification and correlation of strongly weathered tephra layers such as Nzg and Mtj in which all the volcanic glass shards have been altered.

About 100 year variations are found in the field direction of the Matuyama-Brunhes transition. The analysed data are composed of the palaeomagnetic directions from the marine sediment in the Boso Peninsula, whichpreciselyrecordedthe Matuyama-Brunhes transition with a very high accumulation rate (3.7 mm/yr). The section is tentatively divided into two subsections from the directional change, where the main reversal and the rebound occurred in the early stage (subsection 1) and subsequently the field directions show moderate changes in the late stage (subsection II). Applying the Bayesian smoothing method to the directions spanning about 4100 years, the inclination, declination and angular changes in the transition field imply short-period components of the order of 102 years. After removing long-term trends, the maximum entropy method was employed for the detection of short-period variations. The results of the spectral analyses suggest the 60-80 year and the 120-150 year periodicity in the subsections of I and II, respectively. The main reversal and the subsequent rebound seem to have been accomplished for short intervals of about 200 and 300 years, respectively. These rapid variations of the order of 102 years are suggested to be a substantial feature of the transition field.

The Matuyama-Brunhes (MB) geomagnetic reversal in Chinese loess has been studied extensively as an important boundary for land-ocean stratigraphic and paleoclimatic correlations. However, the apparent timing and duration of the MB boundary remain controversial in Chinese loess deposits due to its inconsistent stratigraphic position and the uncertain chronologies. Here we synthesized high-resolution paleomagnetic records from four loess sequences in the central Chinese Loess Plateau and synchronized the loess-paleosol chronology by matching the grain-size variations to orbitally tuned grain-size time series. The synthesized paleomagnetic results reveal consistent features of the MB transition in Chinese loess, including the stratigraphic position (L 8 /S 8 transition), timing (808-826 ka), duration (14-16 ka), and rapid directional oscillations. Compared with the MB transition in marine records (770-775 ka), the timing of the MB transition is relatively older and longer in Chinese loess, due to a complex interplay between different remanence acquisition mechanisms which occurred during the course of postdepositional physical and chemical processes.
