Destruction of toluene and xylene by sulfatе-reducing bacteria

Abstract: As a result of human activity aromatic hydrocarbons enter the environment in large quantities, contaminating it. Dropping of insufficiently treated wastewater drains considerably decrease the quality of water. Quite effective biological methods of purification of contaminated environment are the usage of microorganisms. Prospective microorganisms for sewage treatment are sulfate-reducing bacteria. The purpose of the work was to investigate the ability of sulfate-reducing bacteria to use xylene and toluene as a… Show more

“…D. desulfuricans Ya-11 grew equally in media with ClO 4 and both SO 4 2and ClO 4 -. Presence of perchlorate ions in the medium somewhat inhibited sulfate ion reduction by Desulfotоmaculum AR1 and D. desulfuricans Ya-11 bacteria (Table 1) and D. desulfuricans We have shown the ability of Desulfotоmaculum AR1 and D. desulfuricans Ya-11 bacteria to utilize toluene as a carbon and energy source in our previous works (Verkholiak & Peretyatko, 2019). Growth of Desulfotоmaculum AR1 and D. desulfuricans Ya-11 bacteria in the medium with toluene is twice as low as in the control medium with sodium lactate (Fig.…”

“…For evaluation of the efficiency of hydrogen sulfide production, the calculation of C/S ratio (mg of oxidized organic carbon to mg of sulfide formed) was made for sulfur-reducing bacteria Desulfuromonas sp. YSDS-3 and sulfate-reducing bacteria taken from the literature data (Dorosh et al, 2015;Qiuet et al, 2017;Verkholiak & Peretyatko, 2018;Verkholiak & Peretyatko, 2019). Low C/S ratio indicates the lower energy consumption for electron transfer from donor to elemental sulfur and formation of hydrogen sulfide (Table 1).…”
