Abstract: Our study consequently shows that in addition to the laser, the ultrasonic probe can also easily destroy nitinol (nickel titanium) baskets.

“…Titanium oxide layers have optical effects and could raise reflection [15]. In the setting by Cordes et al 2011 [8] it took some seconds to destroy the wires of the small basket. This differs from the present results and can be attributed to the clinical setting, in which Cordes et al [8] used a renoscope, an artificial ureter and a basket that contained a stone.…”

This differs from the present results and can be attributed to the clinical setting, in which Cordes et al [8] used a renoscope, an artificial ureter and a basket that contained a stone. It appears that in this setup the wire was not fixed as closely as in the holding instrument in the current study, and that the laser incident angel is also important for the resistance.…”

“…3) was closely aligned with the clinical situation as established previously [5]: a metal container was filled with 0.9 % sodium chloride, and a catheter with a diameter of 26 Ch (8.7 mm) was attached as a simulated ureter to the rim of the container. The catheter was wrapped with tape to prevent any scattered light penetrating from outside.…”

“…The stone basket is currently one of the most common devices used to retrieve stone fragments and minimize stone retropulsion during Holmium:YAG laser lithotripsy. However, accidental damage to the stone basket's Nitinol wires frequently occurs during endoscopic Holmium:YAG laser lithotripsy, leading to ureteral trauma . Previous studies have been reported investigating Holmium:YAG laser destruction of stone baskets during lithotripsy .…”
