Designing for Sustainable Behaviour Practices in Consumers: A Case Study on Compostable Materials for Packaging

Abstract: When assessing the sustainability of a product, an ideal life cycle is considered which could include the “Use” and “End of Life” phases. Does human behaviour affect the environmental sustainability? This paper intends to propose a methodological framework for assessing sustainable behavioural scenarios. The framework will be then developed in a specific case study on Compostable Single Use Products (CSUPs), with the aim of designing the identity of compostable materials for packaging in order to guide consume… Show more

“…Perceived quality, which encompasses CMF, contributes to product competitiveness (Becerra, 2016; Braun et al, 2020; Brevi & Gaetani, 2022; Cini & Farrugia, 2017; Liu, 2020; Piselli et al, 2018; Santi et al, 2020). However, as this theoretical framework is relatively new, there is a lack of research in the area of consumer behavior.…”

“…CMF design has become an important source of product competitiveness in various industries such as apparel, cosmetics, home appliances, cars, and aircraft (Becerra, 2016). CMF is also recognized as an effective design option for consumer goods such as food and beverages (Santi et al, 2020). Therefore, CMF is positioned as one of the important strategies of the design department even for manufacturers (Kim & Baek, 2011).…”

“…Design for sustainable behavior is related to LCA, but rather than focusing on the consumption process of the product, it also incorporates the impact of consumer behaviors, which can indirectly affect the overall environmental impact [280]. Analyses such as LCC for life-cycle costing and variations such as sLCA for social consideration and eLCA for LCAs focused on environmental concerns, have appeared and often give different results due to their different aims as well as different data requirements, although frameworks have been considered to allow them to operate in parallel along with alternate schemes, such as cost-benefit analyses (CBA) [125].…”

“…Nowadays, materials evolution, alongside processes technological development, disrupted the design culture (Antonelli, 1995;Antonelli and Burckhardt, 2020) think of e.g. composite materials, additive manufacturing materials, functional and smart materialsenabling totally new products shapes and aesthetics (Bergström et al, 2010;Santi et al, 2020;Vallgarda and Redström, 2007). The contemporary incessant research for new materials is trying to respond, as efficiently as possible, to Sustainable Development: United Nations, as well as Europe, National regulations and people, are demanding for products that are Environmentally, Socially and Economically friendly (United Nations, 2021).…”
