Designing emotion-centred Product Service Systems: The case of a cancer care facility

Abstract: Product Service Systems (PSS) designers are increasingly signalling the importance of emotion. However, emotion is yet to be theoretically and empirically studied in PSS design. This paper offers a conceptual model as well as an in-depth field study of the design of an emotion-centred PSS. The paper draws on and extends appraisal theory, uses it as a lens by which to analyse 'emotional chain reactions' in the data, and produces implications for PSS design theory and practice.

“…We, thus, suggest that media that are more widely used should be designed as to take into account the individual's preferences and choices regarding use (e.g. Stacey and Tether, , p. 114). One avenue for future research that naturally suggests itself from this finding is the investigation of separate media through separate nomological models in terms of their users, workplace stress generating potential and circumstance of use.…”

“…A similar approach was used with a housing development by Dewberry et al [151]. More recently, studies on the design process of circular solutions focussed on how specific elements such as emotion were included in a PSS design in the health sector [154]. Such studies have also questioned how user-centred design was used to develop a sharing solution [152], or how design research infrastructures that integrate users can inform solutions development [153].…”

“…As mentioned above, although provoking positive emotions is likely to be a key factor for the achievement of technology epiphany, only a few studies on integrated products and services have focused on it. For example, Stacey and Tether (2015) found that designers paid attention to the positive emotional chain reactions in the processes of new PSS development. This study also found that the designer drove the development of an integrated emotion-centric product and service in technology epiphany.…”
