Designing a Mobile-app-based Collaborative Learning System

Abstract: Executive SummaryAn important aspect of education is to promote higher-order thinking skills to learners. However, in the lecture environment, learners are passively engaged and it is unlikely for higher-order thinking to occur. Although interventions such as "clickers" can be used to increase engagement in lectures, this does not necessarily promote higher-order thinking. Approaches such as collaborative learning are better suited for this but there is little room to use such methods in the short time frame o… Show more

“…Findings from this study reinforce the results of recent studies (Kirschner, 2001;Cheong et al, 2012;McLoughlin and Luca, 2000) on the importance of enhancing LMSs, demonstrating the educational value of smart learning system which plays crucial role in complementing cooperative function, this was considered as a limitation in the current e-learning system. Using smart phones facilitates collaborative learning through the interaction between learner-learner and learner-instructor.…”

“…Collaborative learning (which is the shift from traditional teacher-centered approaches to new learning approaches including student-centered, social and active learning (Kirschner, 2001)) allows learners achieve an academic goal collectively. This in its turn enhances learners' critical thinking and problem solving abilities, and retains information longer compared to individual learning (Kirschner, 2001;Cheong et al, 2012;McLoughlin and Luca, 2000).…”

“…[23] investigated digital storytelling, and then from the perspective of technology put forward mobile APP development framework whose core model must include five aspects: content area knowledge, digital media, community influence, products and development environment. Combined with the mobile-app-based collaborative learning system, come up with system framework, which could help learners to promote higher-order thinking skills [24]. Based on mobile learning environment analysis, developed and designed a mobile learning management system, which was helpful for users and developers to be more easy to use APP at anytime and anywhere and to reduce the delay phenomena caused by too many clicks [25].…”
