Design, Synthesis, and Structure-Property Relationships of Er3+-Doped TiO2 Luminescent Particles Synthesized by Sol-Gel

Abstract: Titania particles doped with various concentrations of Erbium were synthesized by the sol-gel method followed by different heat treatments. The shape and the grain growth of the particles were noticeably affected by the concentration of Erbium and the heat treatment conditions. An infrared emission at 1530 nm, as well as green and red up-conversion emissions at 550 and 670 nm, were observed under excitation at 976 nm from all of the synthesized particles. The emission spectra and lifetime values appeared to be… Show more

“…The synthesis of the TiO 2 particles doped with 14.3 mol % of Er 2 O 3 was reported in Reference [33]. Specifically, 21.28 g of titanium(IV) butoxide reagent grade (97% Sigma–Aldrich, Saint Louis, MO, USA) were dissolved in ethanol (100 mL) and then added dropwise into a mixture of deionized water (2 mL), ethanol (>99.8% Sigma–Aldrich, Saint Louis, MO, USA), and 8.37 g of erbium (III) acetate (>99.9% Sigma–Aldrich, Saint Louis, MO, USA).…”

“…The bands of relatively low intensity between 3000-2800 cm -1 are attributed to the stretching vibrations of alkyl groups of organic impurities captured by the crystals of zinc oxide during their synthesis [11,23,24]. A few weak absorption bands in the region between 2800 and 2200 cm -1 correspond to hydrogen bonding between surface adsorbed water molecules.…”

“…free O-H groups present on the surface of samples, O-H groups of adsorbed water molecules and also, hydrogen bonded O-H groups. The region from 3800-3600 specifies the stretching vibrations of free O-H groups adsorbed on the surface of titania nanoparticles [43,[50][51][52].…”
