IntroductionCalcium is an essential element as it is the richest inorganic element in the human body, accounting for 1-2 of the body mass 1 . About 99 of the body s calcium is in bones and teeth giving a negotiable pool of calcium 2 . The leftover 1 is circulating in fluids and is liable for the ruling of metabolic functions like hormone discharge, blood coagulation, normal heart rate, enzyme activation, and cell membrane maintenance 3 . Low intake or absorption of mineral-like calcium might generate deficiencies which in turn are related to many human health problems. Calcium deficiency is often connected with vitamin D deficiency, which leads to complications with bone mineralization and severe muscle cramps 4 .Two forms of calcium deficiency are mostly found in humans, i.e., dietary calcium deficiency and hypocalcemia. Historically, deaf and hard-of-hearing students (D/HH) who solely rely on an interpreter during organic chemistry lecture courses at the Rochester Institute of Technology consistently performed below the average in the class. A barrier attributed to this D/HH student performance is the lack of standardized methods in sign language to effectively communicate the organic chemistry terminology. As such, our group worked to address this challenge through a deliberate effort to develop a lexicon of insightful signs/classifiers that convey organic chemistry vocabulary as well as descriptive expansions to demonstrate challenging concepts. We will share our remarkable findings after the signs were developed and implemented, and the implications sign language incorporation in education could have on how we teach all students enrolled in STEM disciplines in the future.

Alginate-calcium carbonate composite beads was prepared by the sol-gel method and characterized by Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy (FT-IR) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) instruments. Adsorption potential of phosphate ions have been studied on laboratory scale. The effects of contact time, adsorbent dosage, initial analyte concentration, pH and agitation speed were optimized at 298.15 K (25°C) in a single ion system. The adsorption process was in accordance with Freundlich model and pseudo second order kinetics. Thermodynamic parameters like ∆G°, ∆H° and ∆S° have also been determined. Objective: To assess the coagulation test abnormalities (prothrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time and fibrin degradation products) in dengue fever patients and its impact on clinical outcomes of the patient. Study Design: Cross-sectional study. Place and Duration of Study: Hematology Department, Pakistan Naval Ship Shifa Hospital, Karachi Pakistan, from Aug 2016 to Feb 2017. Methodology: A total of 135, serologically proven positive dengue-infected IgM cases, based on enzyme-linked immunesorbent assay, were included in the study. Prothrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time, and fibrin degradation products levels were measured on STA Compact Max® (STAGO) and SysmexCA-1500. Clinical Outcomes of the patient were noted. Results: At the time of admission, elevated prothrombin time was observed in 8(5.6%) cases and remained high at the time of discharge (p-value 0.008). Elevated activated partial thromboplastin time was observed in 57 (42.2%) cases at admission whereas, at discharge, it was observed in 56 (41.5%) cases. Increased level (>5) of fibrin degradation products was seen in 30 (22.2%) cases while at the time of discharge increased level of fibrin degradation products was observed in 25 (18.5%) cases (pvalue 0.007). Out of 135 patients, mortality was observed in two cases and the remaining 133 (98.52%) survived and were discharged. Conclusion: In conclusion, prothrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time, and fibrin degradation products can be labeled as early predictors of disease severity and their derangements are associated with clinical outcome in dengue infection.
