Design of RYSEN: An Intrinsically Safe and Low-Power Three-Dimensional Overground Body Weight Support

Abstract: B ODY weight support (BWS) systems are widely used in gait research and rehabilitation. This paper introduces a new 3D overground BWS system, called the RYSEN 7. The RYSEN is designed to be intrinsically safe and low power consuming, while still performing at least as well as existing BWS systems regarding human-robot interaction. These features are mainly achieved by decoupling degrees of freedom between motors: slow/high-torque motors for vertical motion and fast/low-torque motors for horizontal motion. This… Show more

“…Unloading force rendered by the TS BWS depends on the initial zero-deflection set-point of the spring and thus, it is important to consider an appropriate value for the initial set-point during the experimental evaluation of this strategy. Active BWS systems like the ZeroG [13], the FLOAT [41], the RYSEN [42], etc. could measure and slowly adjust to the average position during walking in real time.…”

“…Several BWS designs also allow for modulation of the force vector in other directions than the vertical [13,41,42]. Appropriate interplay of vertical and forward forces may be another mechanism when striving for similar gait dynamics [31].…”

“…Lokomat [ 18 ], G-EO [ 19 ], KineAssist MX [ 20 ]) or mobile (Biodex [ 21 ], Andago [ 22 ]). A second group of devices are ceiling mounted systems that are either based on a single rail mounting giving two degrees of freedom (2-DoF: Zero-G [ 23 ], Vector, Safe Gait) or multiple rail mounting providing three degrees of freedom (3-DoF: FLOAT [ 24 ], Rysen [ 25 ]). In contrast to frame-based systems and 2-DoF ceiling-mounted systems, 3-DoF BWS systems enable greater freedom of movement in all directions.…”

“…While this is readily possible with patients who can support their own body weight, severely affected patients are dependent on BWS. These insights have inspired the development of different ceiling-mounted overground BWS systems [ 18 , 19 ]. The design of overground BWS systems is challenging however, and the reduction of collateral interaction forces, which potentially impede a patient’s walking pattern and body dynamics leading to distorted afferent and efferent signaling, remains a central point [ 20 ].…”
