In today's competitive context, the paradigm of sustainable development is becoming more and more significant, also in warehousing. Managers are progressively considering not only purely economic aspects but also environmental concerns. Despite such consciousness, the selection of automated warehousing solutions has been mainly based on operational and economic performance in both practice and theory so far, whereas energy consumption and environmental performance have not been adequately taken into account. To fill this lack a model is proposed to evaluate the energy consumption and environmental impact of automated warehousing solutions. The model has been used to investigate whether the selection of automated solutions changes varying the dimensions involved in the analysis (i.e. only economic, only environmental or both). The analysis has been performed considering autonomous vehicle storage and retrieval systems (AVS/RSs) and its natural alternative, i.e. automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RSs). Results confirm the importance of considering both dimensions in the assessment of automated warehouses, as depending on the scenario the technology selection shifts from AS/RS to AVS/RS when considering not only the economic but also the environmental impact. Additionally, this study provides new insights on the suitability areas of AVS/RSs.

Resumo: Na atualidade, são inúmeros os desafios enfrentados pelas empresas no que diz respeito à sua competitividade num mercado global e complexo, sendo necessária uma permanente revisão e reavaliação dos seus processos de gestão. O processo de preparação de pedidos (picking) em armazéns é um dos mais críticos, quer pela sua complexidade quer pelo seu custo elevado, pelo que elevados níveis de eficiência são necessários e desejáveis. O objetivo deste artigo é apresentar os resultados de uma pesquisa sobre as tecnologias de preparação de pedidos em armazéns. Foi desenvolvido um modelo conceptual e uma metodologia para suportar a escolha de soluções tecnológicas para a estratégia de picker-to-part. A abordagem proposta incorpora as várias dimensões do processo de decisão sobre avaliação e seleção das tecnologias de preparação de pedidos com base tanto na revisão bibliográfica, quanto a partir de contribuições empíricas obtidas junto de uma empresa fornecedora de tecnologias de preparação de encomendas. No processo de decisão destaca-se a elevada complexidade, pois envolve vários níveis de decisão e várias dimensões que passam pelo layout do armazém, a metodologia de preparação de pedidos, o nível de rastreabilidade a atingir, o modelo de codificação dos produtos, entre outros fatores determinantes, para além do custo da própria solução tecnológica.Palavras-chave: Preparação de pedidos. Abstract:In the present, businesses are facing numerous challenges with regard to their competitiveness in a global and complex marketplace, being required an ongoing review and evaluation of their management processes. The process of picking in Warehouses is one of the most critical, both for its complexity either by its high cost, so high levels of efficiency are necessary and desirable. The objective of this paper is to present the results of a research about the technologies on picking process in warehouses. They were developed a conceptual model and a methodology to support the choice of technological solutions for picker-to-part's strategy. The proposed approach incorporates the various dimensions of decision process for assessment and selection of picking technologies based both, in the literature review, as from empirical contributions obtained from a provider of order picking technologies. In the decision process highlights the highly complexity, as it involves several levels of decision and several dimensions that pass through the layout of the warehouse, the methodology of picking, the level of traceability wanted, the coding model of products, among others determinant factors, beyond the cost of the technological solution itself.Keywords: Picking. Development of an Advanced Picking Station Considering Human Factors

Goods to destination consists of racks, shuttles, conveyors, and picking stations. Racks are used for storing tots, shuttles and conveyors are used for transferring totes, and picking stations are used for order picking. Picking activities are typically repetitive and physically demanding. Awkward postures can result in muscle fatigue and injuries. To understand picking activities and human factors, we performed picking tests and descriptive surveys with participants. Different postures with different picking desk configurations were tested and analyzed with 30 participants. Among the participants, 10 people participated in an electromyograph test and provided subjective results. In case of the LED indicator location of the digital picking station (DPS), 66% of participants felt comfortable when the LED was located between waist level and eye level. In case of the button location of the DPS, 70% of participants felt comfortable when the button was located at waist level. The result shows different views of the DPS application in the warehouse. Last, most participants felt comfortable when totes were placed 5–10 cm higher than the height of the average workstation. This study shows various options for designing picking stations. We believe that this research will provide good guidelines for picking station design which could lead to increases in productivity and workers’ convenience.
