The search for the structural form of reticulated roofs is significant in interdisciplinary Architectural Design optimisation. Combining parametric design with structural logic influences the visual perception of the shape by choosing the most suitable technical solutions. Therefore, the divisions of reticulated structures should be determined to pursue structural, material and fabrication advancement. Structural divisions of free-formed canopies should simultaneously be solved in architectural and structural design at an early stage. Choosing a proper design becomes a complicated process, requiring the ability to select a type of production and rationalise technical solutions mainly due to the computer-aided design supported by algorithmic tools. Based on searching for optimal geometrical divisions, the case study investigates the differences between planar quadrilateral and triangular mesh panelisation. The study concludes the assets and flaws of both geometry shaping methods of reticulated structures based on minimal weight and fabrication aspects. The study concludes that implementing the manufacturing method of the chosen type of gridshells divisions into the architectural design optimisation enhances the resulting free-form structures at the early design stage.

The majority of gridshell structures are built using timber lath and steel. only few are made from bamboo. Constructing a gridshell structure using bamboo is challenging because the anatomy, physical and mechanical properties affect the ability of bamboo culm to be bent. This paper aims to investigate the utilisation of bamboo for gridshell structures by examining bamboo as the material, the elements, and the whole gridshell structure. The experiments were conducted in three stages: testing material properties, examining bending capacity, and constructing a full-scale model of gridshell structure. The bamboo species used in the experiments was Gigantochloa apus, a species that is commonly found in Indonesia. The experiments showed that full-culm bamboo had a limitation on the depth of curvature, which then affected the height of gridshell, the form, and the structure.

The design of unique gridshell forms has become a key factor in effective interdisciplinary designing solutions, both architecturally aesthetic and structurally efficient. Modern bionic tendencies allow designers to implement organic shapes through proportion and mimicking the biological, developmental process by understanding the logic of the structural forms occurring in Nature. The improvement of digital tools based on algorithmic codes has enabled architects to implement their bold designs based on Nature’s technologies’ logic. The purpose of the research was to identify how the mathematical algorithms found in Nature collaborate with parametric designing influence structural optimization of the free-form structures. The Delaunay divisions used in the gridshells form-finding were obtained through various generative modeling algorithms. The case studies demonstrate how mathematical algorithms, such as structural dynamic relaxation, can support architectural aesthetic and structural optimization processes. The paper concludes that proper generative algorithmic design can compromise design diversity and search for efficiency.
