Design of data-intensive Web-based information services

Abstract: One common usage of the WWW is t o provide informa-tion services, e.g. for regional event calenders, university lecture management, travel information, etc. Their design requires a clear picture of the system's usage and the supported technical environment. The core of the problem is to provide flexible access units based on extended views o n some underlying database. The extension consists in escort information, links, operational facilities and means for the generation of diflerent presentations. W e shall … Show more

“…However, the limitation to WIS and e-Learning is also revealed by the necessity to formally distinguish media types [7] and to integrate context [12]. A first approach in distinguishing various abstraction layers in storyboards was introduced in [11].…”

“…Contexts are a special kind of objects that represent real world divisions or environments. In [8] the authors consider a context as a set of user profiles, and organize them using a concept of dimension (similar as in our approach). The dimension is used to organize the data of a profile in totally ordered sets.…”

“…This means to transform a set {v 1 A raw media type has a name M and consists of a content data type cont(M ) with the extension that the place of a base type may be occupied by a pair : M with a label and the name M of a raw media type, and a defining query q M with create-facility such that ({t M }, q M ) defines a view. Here t M is the type arising from cont(M ) by substitution of URL for all pairs : M .…”

“…Formally, we define a partial order ≤ on content data types, which extends subtyping [1]. If cont(M ) is the content data type of a raw media type M and sup(cont(M )) is the set of all content expressions exp with cont(M ) ≤ exp, then a partial order M on sup(cont(M )) extending the order ≤ on content expressions is called an cohesion order .…”
