In this article, PCB embedded UHF tunable filters with different coupling coefficients have been designed, fabricated, characterized, and compared.The relationship between the coupling coefficient and the performance of a filter has been investigated. The proposed filters were fully embedded into multilayered printed circuit board (PCB). They were comprised of high Q spiral stacked inductors, high dielectric SrTiO3 composite MIM capacitors, and varactor diodes. The fabricated UHF tunable filters were operated in the frequency regime ranged from 500 MHz to 900 MHz for TV tuner receivers. The filter with a coupling coefficient of 0.26 exhibited insertion loss of approximately −2 dB, return loss of below −10 dB, and tuning range of 56.3%. In our knowledge, the fabricated UHF tunable filter was first embedded into the organic packaging substrate and the smallest one in the previously reported devices, which had compact size/volume of 3.4 × 4.4 × 0.6 mm3. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A simple technique for the design of new, vialess square-ring bandpass filters is presented. The proposed technique is based on the full-wave electromagnetic simulation of a single filter section with variable offset distance to realize wide range of bandpass filters with flexible specifications at any given center frequency. The new, multilayered filter configurations are vialess in nature, taking advantage of the broadside coupling between different layers for simple fabrication. Two, three-resonator Chebyshev bandpass filters with 20% and 10% bandwidth are designed at a center frequency of 2 GHz and the theoretical response is validated by measurement. Due to the EM based design approach, the proposed technique offers high degree of accuracy. These new configurations are suitable for a variety of multilayered fabricational technologies.

In this paper, compact spiral inductor resonators filters, which are embedded in the package substrate, using spiral inductor type resonator are proposed. The design is based on the selfresonance frequency of the spiral inductors and electromagnetic coupling effects among resonators. The filters were built and measurement results have good agreement with the simulation data. The proposed filter design technique is generalized and can be implemented in different multilayer arrangement. The new compact inductor resonator filters exhibit a significant size reduction compared to the existing distributed filter topology. The inductor resonator filter designs are based on full-wave electromagnetic analysis. A lumped element equivalent circuit based on the simulated data of the filter is also derived for integration in SPICE type simulator.The compactness of the newly developed bandpass filter makes the design and integration of bandpass filters attractive for further development and applications in System-In-a-Package (SIP).1
