Design of a WSN for smart irrigation in citrus plots with fault-tolerance and energy-saving algorithms

Abstract: Wireless sensor networks are widely used for monitoring different processes, including agriculture, in order to reach sustainability. One of the keys to sustainable crops is water saving. In particular, saving water is extremely important in arid and semiarid regions. In those regions, citrus trees are cultivated, and drip irrigation is used to save water. In this paper, we propose a smart irrigation system for citrus trees using a WSN. We describe the employed sensors and nodes for this proposal. Next, we pre… Show more

“…We show the results of simulating the proposed algorithm in terms of formation time considering different scenarios with 1 to 7 ANs and 1 to 2 SN. Moreover, we show the created links in a portion to the smart garden after phase 1, phase 2 and phase 3 after the deployment of two new nodes As future works, we expect to evaluate the energy consumption when the alarms are sent from different SN as it was done in [15]. In addition, we pretend to include a phase 4 aimed to modify the SS-bridges in case that one of them reaches low energy levels.…”

“…Thus, routing protocols and schemes [102]- [105] become more important in order to better manage the coordination between PUs and SUs, and to improve the performance gain of the whole CR system. Based on cross-layer DSA schemes presented in [101], more advanced cross-layer scheduling techniques should be proposed, to further adapt the sensing and transmission interval and to improve EE, and to deal with more complex network scenarios (e.g.…”

“…Irrigation has been considered in existing precision agriculture systems. However, monitoring the quality of the water that is going to be employed for irrigation has started to be considered for new smart agriculture proposals [1]. The reason for this interest in water quality monitoring for irrigation began as a result of the water scarcity problem that affects several areas belonging to Mediterranean countries.…”
