In electrical systems the most critical disturbance is the interruption of the power service. However, the main concern for many commercial and industrial users is the mal-operation produced by voltage sags. This paper presents a study about the performance of a distribution system in presence of voltage sags using a distribution generation (DG) unit and a distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM). The analysis is performed by using a method for stochastic generation of disturbances and the ATP/EMTP software tool. Several case studies using the IEEE-13, bus test feeder taking to account different DG locations and penetration levels for DG unit are presented. In addition, the relation between the injected DSTATCOM reactive power, the type of sag and the location of affected nodes is considered. Simulations show that for IEEE-13 system the DSTATCOM is the best alternative for sags mitigation at a specific point in the system. However, the DG unit is an alternative that can be considered in larger distribution systems to reduce the effects of voltage sags.Keywords: ATP/EMTP, DSTATCOM, Distributed Generation, Sags Mitigation, Voltage Sag. ResumenEn los sistemas eléctricos la perturbación más crítica que se presenta es la interrupción del servicio. Sin embargo, el principal problema para muchos clientes comerciales e industriales es la mala operación producida por los hundimientos de tensión (sags). Este artículo presenta un estudio sobre el desempeño de un sistema de distribución en presencia de sags usando una unidad de generación distribuida (DG) y un compensador estático de distribución (DSTATCOM). El análisis es llevado a cabo a partir de un método estocástico de generación de perturbaciones y el uso de la herramienta de simulación ATP/EMTP. Se presentan varios casos de estudio usando el sistema de distribución IEEE-13, teniendo en cuenta diferentes ubicaciones y niveles de penetración para la unidad DG. Adicionalmente, se considera la relación entre la potencia reactiva inyectada por el DSTATCOM, el tipo de sag y la ubicación del nodo afectado. Las simulaciones muestran que para el sistema IEEE-13 el DSTATCOM es la mejor alternativa para la mitigación de sags en un punto específico del sistema. Sin embargo, la unidad DG es una alternativa que puede ser considerada para reducir los efectos de sags en sistemas de distribución de gran tamaño.

ÖZStatik Senkron Kompanzatör (STATCOM) iletim hatlarında reaktif güç kompanzasyonu ve güç sistemi kararlılığının artırılması için kullanılmaktadır. STATCOM dağıtım hatlarında kullanılırsa dağıtım STATCOM (DSTATCOM) olarak isimlendirilmektedir. Özel bir güç aygıtı olan DSTATCOM, dağıtım sistemlerinde güç kalitesi sorunlarını çözmek için kullanılan ortak kuplaj noktasına şönt bağlı bir gerilim kaynaklı eviricidir. Evirici STATCOM ve DSTATCOM'un temel yapı birimidir. Literatürde önerilen ve gerçek uygulamalarda kullanılan birçok evirici yapıları mevcuttur. Bu makalede, bugüne kadar STATCOM ve DSTATCOM'da kullanılan evirici yapıları incelenmektedir. Evirici yapılarının avantaj ve dezavantajları ortaya konulmaktadır. When a STATCOM used in a distribution system it is called Distribution STATCOM (DSTATCOM). As a custom power device DSTATCOM is a shunt connected voltage source inverter to a common coupling point in the distribution system and is used for to improve the power quality problems. The main structural unit of STATCOM and DSTATCOM are inverters. Many inverter topologies are used in the application and a lot of proposed inverter structures are available in the literature. In this study the inverter structures and topologies that are used in STATCOM and DSTATCOM up to now are investigated. The advantages and disadvantages of the inverter structures are presented. Also a lot of examples from the literature have been given. *
