Design of a novel broadband compact dual polarized horn

Abstract: A novel wideband design of a Ka-band compact dual polarized horn is presented. In order to suppress multimode affection, a novel multimode conical horn replaces conical horn. The simulated 10dB return loss bandwidth is approximately 15.6% (ranging from 29.5 to 34.5GHz). The simulated insertion loss of the orthomode transducer is less than -0.15dB, the isolation less than -55dB, and the VS WR is less than 1.3 in the operating frequency (ranging from 31 to 33GHz). This structure has properties of not only a wide… Show more

“…Designed antenna allows to operate in wider frequency bands compared to the counterparts reported in References 103–105. A wider operating frequency band is provided only by the counterpart antenna from Reference 106, but its matching and isolation are much worse and unacceptable by many modern radio engineering appliances. The values of rectangular waveguide ports isolation, which are obtained in proposed antenna and counterparts from References 104,105 are comparable to each other.…”

“…The usual method to obtain switchable polarization is utilizing the properties of PIN diode in the microstrip antennas [4,5], but these antennas cannot match the requirements of longer range wireless communication and horn antenna maybe a better choice because of its high efficiency and high gain with great power capacity. In [6], a horn antenna is presented to realize the broadband polarization splitting, but the dual-port feeding configuration may increase the system complexity and the processing cost of antenna, which is inconvenient in miniaturized system. Consequently, a novel CP horn antenna with switchable polarization by single port feeding is introduced and carefully examined.…”
