Design of a holographic tracking module for long-range retroreflector free-space systems

Abstract: Weight reduction and low power consumption are key requirements in the next generation of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). To communicate with an operator, a secured link between the UAV and a ground-based station is desirable. To realize these links, retroreflecting free-space optics is potentially attractive as it offers light weight and low complexity at the UAV. However, the base station requires a high-performance tracking module to enable a steady illumination of the UAV retroreflector. In this paper, we… Show more

“…Proof: Please refer to Appendix C. The coefficients B n in (23) depend on the parameters σ θo and the number of sectors denoted by N . Obviously, the accuracy of the proposed model in (23) directly depends on the number of sectors N , and for sufficiently large values of N , an exact match between simulations and analysis can be achieved at the cost of higher complexity. Hence, choosing an optimal value for N involves a trade-off between complexity and accuracy.…”

“…Substituting ( 46) and ( 47) in (43), we obtain (48). Finally using [47, 07.34.21.0084.01] and after some manipulations, the closed-form expression for h is derived in (23). Substituting (23) in (17) and using [47, eq.…”
