A multifunctional scatterometer system and optimized radar signal processing for simultaneous observation of various physical oceanographic parameters are described in this paper. Existing observation methods with microwave remote sensing techniques generally use several separate systems such as scatterometer, altimeter, and Doppler radar for sea surface monitoring, which are inefficient in system operation and cross-analysis of each observation data. To improve this point, we integrated separate measurement functions into a single observation system by adding a measurement function of Doppler frequency to the existing system. So it enables to simultaneously measure the range and polarimetric responses of backscattering as well as movements of the sea surface. Here, the simultaneous measurement function of Doppler frequency was implemented by sampling an FMCW (frequency modulated continuous wave) radar signal as 2D raw data consisting of fast- and slow-time samples, i.e., the range and backscattering of radar target signals are analyzed from the fast-time samples while the Doppler frequency by the radar target’s movement extracts from the slow-time samples. Through the Fourier transformed-based range-Doppler signal process, distance (R), backscattering (σ°), and Doppler frequency (fD) are sequentially extracted from the 2D raw data, and a correlation to the physical oceanographic parameters is analyzed. Operability of the proposed system was examed through total 3 times of field campaigns from June 2017 to August 2020 and the observation data retrieved by the radar measurement data (R,σ°,fD) was also cross-analyzed with in-situ data: e.g., tide, significant wave height, and wind speed and direction. Differences in the comparative results as an observational accuracy are as follows. Tidal level (Root Mean Square Error 0.169 m (R)), significant wave height (RMSE 0.127 m (R), 0.362 m (σ°)), wind speed (RMSE 1.880 m/s (fD), 2.094 m/s (σ°)) and direction (18.84° (fD)).

황지환․권순구․신종철․오이석 Ji-Hwan Hwang․Soon-Gu Kwon․Jong-Chul Shin․Yisok Oh 요 약 본 연구에서는 C-밴드 대역 지상 운용 회전형 SAR 시스템에 대한 시험 결과를 선보인다. 회전형 SAR 시스템 은 지상과 우주 공간 상에서 운용될 수 있는 미래의 회전형 SAR 시스템을 위한 시험대(test-bed)로써, 지표면 및 낮은 깊이의 지표면 속 목표물로부터의 전자파 산란를 영상화하기 위해 설계되었다. 또한, 생성된 SAR 영상 과 시험결과를 본 논문에서 선보인다. 회전형 SAR 시스템은 네트워크 분석기(Agilent 8753E)를 기반으로한 HPS (Hongik Polarimetric Scatterometer) 시스템과 수평 회전팔(1.6 m)로 구성된다. 설계/제작된 시스템을 이용하여 다 양한 목표물 설정 지역에서 SAR 영상을 획득하였다. 회전형 SAR 시스템을 검증하기 위해서 FDTD(Finite Difference Time Domain) 알고리즘을 이용한 SAR 영상 생성 과정을 모의 실험하였으며, 실제 측정 결과를 이용한 SAR 영상을 비교 분석하였다. 설계/제작된 회전형 SAR 시스템은 5 GHz의 중심 주파수로 운용되며, 해상도 조 절을 위해 대역폭을 0.5～2 GHz 범위 내에서 변화시켜 SAR 영상을 분석하였다.Abstract A C-band ground-based rotational SAR system is presented in this paper. The rotaional SAR system is a test-bed for future rotational SAR systems which can be deployed in space and on a tower. The test-bed system is designed for imaging the electromagnetic scattering from earth surfaces and buried targets. This paper also presents the examination results of the generated SAR images. This rotational SAR system is basically consisted of the network-analyzer based HPS(Hongik Polarimetric Scatterometer) and a horizontally rotating arm. Several SAR images were obtained using the rotational SAR system for various target areas. To verify this system, we simulated the SAR images for the rotational SAR using the FDTD algorithm and compared between the measured and simulated SAR images. The rotational SAR system is operated at the center frequency of 5 GHz and various frequency bandwidth within 0.5～2 GHz to change the resolution of SAR images.

Analysis of Backscattering Coefficients of Corn Fields Using the First-Order Vector Radiative Transfer Technique

In this study, we analyzed the effect of corn growth on the radar backscattering coefficient. At first, we measured the backscattering coefficients of various corn fields using a polarimetric scatterometer system. The backscattering coefficients of the corn fields were also computed using the 1st-order VRT(Vector Radiative Transfer) model with field-measured input parameters. Then, we analyzed the experimental and numerical backscattering coefficients of corn fields. As a result, we found that the backscatter from an underlying soil layer is dominant for early growing stage. On the other hand, for vegetative stage with a higher LAI(Leaf-Area-Index), the backscatter from vegetation canopy becomes dominant, and its backscattering coefficients increase as incidence angle increases because of the effect of leaf angle distribution. It was also found that the estimated backscattering coefficients agree quite well with the field-measured radar backscattering coefficients with an RMSE(Root Mean Square Error) of 1.32 dB for VV-polarization and 0.99 dB for HH-polarization. Finally, we compared the backscattering characteristics of vegetation and soil layers with various LAI values.
