Design of a Curved Shape Photonic Crystal Taper for Highly Efficient Mode Coupling

Abstract: The design and modeling of a curved shape photonic crystal taper consisting of Si rods integrated with a photonic crystal waveguide are presented. The waveguide is composed of a hexagonal lattice of Si rods and optimized for CO2 sensing based on absorption spectroscopy. We investigated two different approaches to design a taper for a photonic crystal waveguide in a hexagonal lattice of silicon rods. For the first approach (type 1), the taper consists of a square lattice taper followed by a lattice composed of … Show more

“…The adiabatic coupling technique between a PhC waveguide (W1) and a CCW in 2D PhCs is analyzed and discussed using finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulations and the plane wave expansion (PWE) method. An adiabatic transmission can take place if the operating mode of the waveguide is propagating (non-evanescent) and guided at each point of the waveguide [ 26 , 27 ]. This approach was employed for the effective design of a composite waveguide comprising multiple adiabatically coupled waveguide segments.…”

“…The inimitable feature of the tapered structure is that the cascaded nonlinearity in the longitudinal direction can be enhanced over the entire crystal length. The concept of taper in an anisotropic crystal has been discussed in detail using the following equation: 41 d=Di+(DiD0)[(1xL)σ1].…”

“…Then a doped polycrystalline Si layer was deposited via low-pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD) on top. Afterwards the structures were etched using a standard Bosch etch process [2]. For the pillars, the Si layer had a height of roughly 4 μm and the etch process was performed over the whole thickness.…”

“…The basic concept, which we investigate here in the context of a miniaturized sensitive integrated gas sensor, is based on the idea of combining plasmonic propagation bound to a conductive surface with propagation within a pillar type photonic crystal (PhC) structurebased waveguide [2], which enables slow group velocity, wavelength selectivity and strong interaction with the gas to be measured. The conceptual structure is shown in Figure 1.…”
