Design of 6-Band Tight Frame Wavelets With Limited Redundancy

Abstract: In this paper we explore the design of tight frame wavelets with a dilation factor M = 4. The resulting limit functions are significantly smoother than their orthogonal counterparts. An advantage of the proposed filters over the dyadic filterbanks is that the proposed filterbanks result in a reduced redundancy when compared with dyadic tight frames, while maintaining smoothness. The proposed filterbanks generate five wavelets and a scaling function with the underlying filters related as follows: H5−i(z) = Hi(−… Show more

“…For standard dyadic wavelets, few wavelet bases can compete with the 9/7 filter, and it is hard to improve the performance it achieves significantly [26]. For certain image processing applications, such as denoising, wavelet frames with nearly shift-invariant properties show promise [27], but they are expansive, that is, the number of wavelet coefficients produced is larger than the number of input samples [28], which complicates their possible use in compression applications.…”

“…The resulting filterbanks require pre/post processing with IIR filter. In a more recent paper [31], 6-band tight frame filterbanks with scaling factor M = 4, and with symmetric lowpass filter, are designed using Gröbner basis method [32,33]. In [34], the authors propose n-dimensional tight frames obtained from orthogonal filterbanks by properly reducing the downsampling rate.…”
