Design, lifestyles and sustainability. Aesthetic consumption in a world of abundance

Abstract: This paper strives for a conceptualization of sustainability, design and contemporary consumption. By sketching out how effective production systems have created an abundance of products, the paper links this development to the aestheticization of society and an increased interest in design. In market economies characterized by profusion, corporations engage in activities filling their offerings with aura, aesthetics, symbols and meaning. “…If the assumption is made, which is supported in research (Goldsmith and Hofacker, 1991;Shoham and Ruvio, 2008), that innovativeness is correlated with opinion leadership, the early adopter group is important for diffusion. Considering that the car is a particularly visible product, adoption of AFVs might act as an expression of a green lifestyle (see, e.g., Dobers and Strannegård, 2005). The early adopters thus have the potential to drive both technical development and spreading the demand for eco-innovations into other groups by expressing their norms to other consumers.…”

“…Though popular, it is not the approach taken in this paper. Many authors now argue that this attitude–behavior perspective neglects the dominance of lifestyle and daily routine and the social contexts in which these patterns evolve (Dobers and Stannegård, ; Mylan, ; Spaargaren, ). Individuals are inconsistent, their attitudes predicting specific behaviors in one context and contradicting it in another (Spaargaren, ).…”

“…This context is often treated as an external variable, such as the oft‐utilized theory of planned behavior by Fishbein and Ajzen (). Dobers and Stannegård () argue that most sustainable consumption research has focused on the consumers' point of purchase behavior rather than the process of identity creation and the ever‐evolving construction of lifestyle. When consumption is viewed as a process, human needs, ambitions and interactions come to light.…”
