Design for sustainable behaviour: strategies and perceptions

Abstract: This paper presents selected findings of doctoral research exploring how design could be used to influence user behaviour towards more sustainable practices. It describes three strategies for changing user behaviour through design drawn from literature and outlines the methodology and findings of a case study exploring the application of these strategies in sustainable design. Drawing on the perceptions of design professionals interviewed in response to one of the concepts generated, the paper goes on to explo… Show more

“…Design for sustainable behaviour (Bhamra et al, 2011;Lilley, 2009) and other areas of 'design for behaviour change' and 'persuasive technology' (Fogg, 2003) represent a burgeoning field of current investigation and practice (e.g. Zachrisson et al, 2011, Tromp et al, 2011, Thorpe, 2010Davis, 2010;van Dam et al, 2010;Froehlich et al, 2010;Matsuhashi et al, 2009;Wever et al, 2008;Lockton et al, 2008;Rodriguez & Boks 2005).…”

“…Over the last decade there has been a rapidly growing research area concerned with using the theory from behavioural studies to design strategies that influence user behaviour and promote more sustainable use of products and services (Elizondo, 2011). Lilley (2009) argues that there is an axis of influence between the user and the product that determines where the power in decision making lies (figure 1). At one end the user makes an informed decision to change behaviour based on real-time aural, visual or tactile information or feedback.…”

“…Along with growing interest for DfSB a number of different design strategies have emerged (Lilley, 2009;Selvefors et al, 2014;Wever et al, 2008;Zachrisson and Boks, 2012). While many frameworks have a different emphasis and some disparate interpretations, Error!…”
