The objective of the study was to develop and test an automatic machine vision-based spraying robot for the detection, tracking, and spraying of artificial weeds by using LabVIEW programming language. The greenness method was used to distinguish green objects in the image. A time-controlled spray nozzle was run according to the presence of an artificial weed and its coordinates. A mobile test bench was built and the spraying system with a webcam was operated at speeds of 0.42, 0.54, 0.66, 0.78, and 0.90 km h -1 , so as to be able to see the performance of the system. The amount of deposits on the ground in the spray pattern was evaluated on the test area and used in comparisons for site specific and broadcast spraying methods. A spraying solution containing brilliant sulpho-flavin (BSF) tracer (0.4 g L -1 ) and filter papers were used to compare the deposition of spray pattern achieved on the ground with both methods. According to the results, site-specific spraying application saved on average 89.48%, 79.98%, and 73.93% application volumes for 500 ms, 1000 ms, and 1500 ms spraying durations, respectively, at all spraying speeds is compared to broadcast spraying application. As one would expect, deposits on the filter papers decreased with increasing spraying speed. In addition, operating the system with 1000 ms nozzle controlled site specific spraying at different speeds did not cause a significant difference in the amount of deposits in the spray pattern and spraying accuracy as compared to the broadcast spraying method.

The performance of locally flaming weeder machine pulled with tractor through three levels of gas pressure (1, 1.5 and 2 bar), flame height above the ground (15, 20 and 25 cm) and four travel speeds (0.6, 0.9, 1.2 and 1.5 km/h) in the machine actual field capacity and field efficiency under both a single or double rows of burners were evaluated. The machine consist of the main frame and the flaming system which consisted of four burners were installed in one or two rows with suitable inclination and opening air outlet and propane gas as well as three heights from the ground surface. The evaluation of the flaming machine showed acceptable results which is suitable for use with an organic olive and apple agriculture to obtained very powerful tool for weed control and lowest recovery rates. Thereby, the most successful parameters were double burner rows, travel speeds 0.6 km/h and highest gas pressure 2 bar as well as lowest flaming height (15cm) while, the gas consumption calculated by 40kg/fed. The obtained result revealed that the control activity of flaming in some narrow and broad leaved weeds was exhibited highly positive responses than perennial weeds. The weed control efficiency increased with lower travel speed and higher gas pressure as well as burner height. Further studies will be recommended for design a suitable burner and sensors to give regularity fire between the crops seedling and to avoiding the harmful effect on the economic plants.

Sustainable Organic Corn Production with the Use of Flame Weeding as the Most Sustainable Economical Solution

Flame weeding is an alternative method of weed control. Essentially, it is a supplement to other physical and mechanical processes used in organic production. Weed control costs have a large share of the total cost of crop production. This study aimed to investigate hand weed hoeing’s cost-effectiveness, accompanied by inter-row cultivation and flame weeding applied in organic maize production using two different machines to determine the economically best solution. For this purpose, the prototype flame weeder and commercial flame-weeding machinery were used. Designed primarily for smaller fields, the prototype flame weeder was equipped with a cultivator and a 70 kg propane bottle. Commercial Red Dragon flame weeder, fitted with an 800 kg propane tank and featuring no cultivation implements, is designed for larger areas. The analysis has shown that hand hoeing produced a higher yield (8.3 t/ha in total), but it contributed significantly to the production costs. The costs per hectare decreased when the prototype flame weeder and the commercial Red Dragon flame weeder were used compared to hand hoeing. More beneficial economic impacts were recorded when the prototype flame weeder was used (489.39 €/ha) than in applying the Red Dragon flame weeder (456.47 €/ha). The efficacy of flame weeding is somewhat limited and could be enhanced by additional hand hoeing, if the effect of the machine in terms of weeding is observed. However, the analysis has shown that, in this case, investments in additional hand hoeing are not economically justified because the operating costs incurred therein (168 €/ha) were not met by a yield increase of 500 kg/ha, i.e., a surplus revenue of 100 €/ha. Moreover, the economic impacts of flame weeding would be considerably more significant in larger fields.
