Design, Development and Evaluation of Targeted Discrete-Flame Weeding for Inter-row Weed Control Using Machine Vision

Abstract: Weed management is a major constraint in organic crop production. The main objectives were design, development and evaluation of a targeted-discrete flame weeder in laboratory and comparing continuous (uniform) flame weeding with targeted flaming of inter-row weeds in an organic maize production field. In the laboratory tests, optimum angle and height of burners, as well as accuracy and precision of the targeted discrete-flamer were evaluated at three levels of ground speed (0.5, 0.7 and 0.9 m s -1 ). In the f… Show more

“…where EG means "excessive green" and R, G, and B are the color components of the image. Many researchers used the same method in their studies (Yang et al, 2002;Yang et al, 2003;Jafari et al, 2006b;Shirzadifar et al, 2013;Loni et al, 2014;Sabancı and Aydın, 2014;Sabancı and Aydın, 2017). The purpose of this method is to detect the greenness of the color.…”

“…Some researchers that used image processing techniques other than the greenness method, had to use a white plastic cover structure, a light diffuser (cast acrylic cover), etc. over their vision sensors in order to avoid direct sunlight and reduce the effects of natural illumination (Perez et al, 2000;Tangwongkit et al, 2006;Loni et al, 2014).…”

“…The results of the laboratory tests showed that the optimum position of burners were 25 cm above the ground surface and inclined at 30º for achieving acceptable accuracy in application of targeted flaming. In the field trials, weed control calculated three days after flaming was significantly higher than that of one day after flaming and the first flaming was significantly more effective than the second and third flaming (Loni et al, 2014). Thermal weed control requires knowledge of the plants' thermal sensitivity.…”

“…Weed control is a challenge in all systems of agricultural production, but it is especially pronounced in organic crop production. The use of herbicides is unallowed [19,20], so weed control is often limited to physical methods where hand weeding and mechanical cultivation are the most popular [21]. Organic producers often utilize hand weeding, but it is expensive, time-consuming, and challenging to organize [22].…”
