Design considerations of a small UAV platform carrying medium payloads

Abstract: Nowadays, the research in unmanned aerial vehicles has experimented a large increase, since the technology that compose this kind of aircrafts has been developed in order to achieve many kinds of tasks in several fields. In this paper, it is presented the design criteria of a Quadrotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicle with an uncommon small size and heavy payload carrying combination requirement. It will be performed a selection of the appropriate mechanical structure and its configuration. This study will focus in the… Show more

“…Due to the average battery life of an MAV dipping between 10 and 20 minutes, limited flight times are among the main obstacles for MAV innovation [21,22]. Eventually, a study for flight time advancement up to approximately 30 minutes has been carried out by [23]. WPT via magnetic resonance coupling is one of the potential approaches for supplying power to MAVs to overcome restrictions.…”

“…Small attributable platforms are emerging as new vehicles that can enable a multitude of tasks (e.g., support of commercial disaster recovery operations including wild-fire communications relays with command centers, etc.). The design and constraint requirements for a medium size unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) are presented in Table 1 as defined in [8]. The payload size, weight, and power (SWAP) requirements are crucial metrics that need to be considered when designing the CCS architecture such that it can fit adequately within the bay of the platform, take advantage of platform power, and not exceed the maximum weight capacity, which would undoubtedly limit operations.…”

“…The motors have the most power consumption of all of the components on quadrotor type UAV, so that is why the autonomy is given by the motors battery. This is going to be an 8 cells LiPo battery with a capacity of 22000 mAh, which will provide between 25 and 30 minutes flight, considering that the UAV weigh 7.5 Kg including structure, batteries and electronics [17]. The electronics battery will be a 3 cells LiPo.…”
