Setup of a communication and control systems of a quadrotor type Unmanned Aerial Vehicle

Abstract: This paper outlines the communication and control systems of a quadrotor type Unmanned Aerial Vehicle. The communication system comprises two different links, one for data and other for video signal, and all integrated by an autopilot module. The data link will be implemented using XBee modules and Mavlink communication protocol. The video transmission system will consist of two separate links which can work together avoiding interferences by using orthogonal polarization each other. It is also given some insi… Show more

“…The Parrot Bebop 2 [ 43 ] drone is controllable through MAVLink [ 74 ] or Micro Air Vehicle Link, which is a protocol for communicating with small unmanned vehicle. It is based on a very lightweight, header-only message marshalling library [ 75 ], which allows to codify both flight plan related instructions and measurement triggering instructions in a time ordered sequence. For example, a Flight Plan with two waypoints would be defined by a set of consecutive MAVLINK instructions, which at very high level could be: Take off—Start video capture—Go to a waypoint (with yaw constraint)—Start/finish picture capture—Go to another waypoint (with yaw constraint)—Start/finish picture capture—End video capture—Land.…”

“…In general, a UAV communication link can both send control commands from the GCS to the vehicle and receive data about the flight on downlink, as shown in Figure 2. A bidirectional link can be established in order to provide a communication between the drone and GCS [21]. A communication link between these two components has to provide long-range operations as well as a continuous and stable link.…”

“…The telemetry signal is then transmitted to the GCS and can be displayed for the pilot via open source software like Mission Planner, Q Ground Control Station, APM Planner, etc. The video channel for the First-Person View (FPV) is usually transmitted via a dedicated wireless channel, for example [8].…”
